Wigan Progress, Arsenal Depleted

Wigan Athletic march through to the last sixteen of the FA Cup following their 3-2 home win over Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. Leicester City await the Latics who won the game ten minutes from time with Franco Di Santo’s second goal of the game, having given up a two-goal lead during the second-half.

Wigan started with the same XI as they did against Saints, Florian Klein keeping his place ahead of Reginaldo on the right-flank, buoyed by four straight wins in all competitions. Arsenal come into the cup tie level on points with Wigan in the league, having almost identical records, picking up 40 points from 23 games.FA-Cup-LogoLive tweets courtesy of @realtimeFM:

WIGAN (4-4-2): Schenkel – Boyce, Caldwell, Ramis, Garciá – Klein, McCarthy, Watson, Maloney – Di Santo, Guidetti. ARSENAL play 4-5-1.

Wigan get us underway in the rain, shooting left to right.

2′ Theo Walcott latches on to the through-ball first, beats the challenge from Caldwell but lashes over from 15 yards. A glorious chance.

7′ Wigan’s first attack of the game sees John Guidetti fizz a shot inches wide from the edge of the area.

11′ Koscielny’s short backpass puts Fabianski in trouble as Maloney pressures, the clearance only reaches Di Santo but his shot is tame.

19′ Podolski looks isolated as lone Arsenal frontman. Attack breaks down and Wigan counter quickly, Maloney drifts his shot over though.

27′ Wigan force the first corner of the game. Di Santo played in by Maloney, but his shot deflected wide by Jenkinson.

27′ 1-0 WIGAN! Maloney’s corner is met at the near post by John GUIDETTI to head home. Arsenal didn’t have a man on the post and pay for it.

30′ A dominant Wigan almost double lead. McCarthy cracks from 20 yards, clips the bar and goes over. Arsenal can’t handle pace down flanks.

32′ 2-0 WIGAN. Arsenal give the ball away from a throw-in, and Franco DI SANTO beats the offside trap before slamming home from 18 yards.

45′ Two minutes added on as Wigan look to preserve their two-goal lead going into half-t… wait a minute, penalty to Arsenal!

45+1′ Gibbs tripped by Garcia as he takes on the defender, no doubt, and Jon Moss points to the spot.

45+3′ PODOLSKI converts the penalty to make it 2-1. Slams it straight down the middle. And that’s half-time. Back in fifteen!

46′ Second-half is underway at the DW. Wigan lead Arsenal 2-1, with Leicester City awaiting the winners in the last 16.

49′ Mayhem in the six-yard box after Maloney turns the ball goalwards. Three shots and three ricochets laters, Wigan have the corner.

55′ Great work from Guidetti down the left and his cross is met at the back post by Di Santo, but his header hits the bar and is cleared.

56′ 2-2 and Arsenal are level. Schenkel can only parry Rosicky’s daisy-cutter and PODOLSKI reacts first to slam home the equaliser.

66′ Garcia picks up the first booking of the match for hauling down a full-flight Oxlade-ChamberlIn. Arsenal really pushing here.

70′ Substitution for the Latics: Reginaldo comes on for Klein on Wigan’s right-hand side.

82′ 3-2 WIGAN! Reginaldo is in acres of space on the right and he squares across the six-yard box for DI SANTO to score his second.

84′ Podolski cautioned for a dive just inside the penalty area. Boo.

87′ McCarthy hacks one off the line as Arsenal push to earn a replay. Sub: Boyce replaced by Ronnie Stam.

90′ Three minutes to be added on as Maxime Schenkel is injured in Wigan’s goalmouth. Al-Habsi likely to replace him.

90+2′ John Guidetti is hauled down, thirty-yards out, but clean through. Johan Djourou is shown a yellow. Wigan soaking up time.

FULL TIME: Wigan 3-2 Arsenal. Wigan will host Leicester in the FA Cup Fifth Round on 16th February.
