Closed-Doors Friendly v. Dortmund Under-23s

Tuesday 18 June:

Borussia Dortmund’s senior squad are set to play a behind closed-doors exhibition match today against the Under-23s, the first time that new manager GS will oversee his new team perform together. A second training match, against the Under-19 squad, is set to be played on Sunday 23 June. 17 of BVB’s senior squad are available for the fixture, with Götze, Gündogen, and Leitner in Israel with the German Under-21s. Viktor Fischer (Ajax, transfer) and Julian Koch (on loan at Duisburg) won’t be available until 01 July.

bakalorzThe senior squad will feature a strong starting XI, but it’s believed that GS will be looking closely at the performances of second-string players Marvin Bakalorz (pictured), Konstantin Fring, and Hervenogi Unzola before deciding whether further investment in the first team is required.

Update: Marvin Bakalorz, Marcel Halstenberg and Marc Hornschuh have been drafted into the senior squad ahead of the match. BVB’s senior squad will therefore field 9 substitutes.

Livetweets from @realtimeFM:

0′ The reserves kickoff in this exhibition match between the BVB senior and second-string sides.

7′ Blaszczykowski creates space for himself before pulling the ball back to Bender who forces a great save from Hohmann from 25 yards.

8′ The U23s clear the corner and counter quickly. Möllering strides forwards with the ball but Piszczek makes a fantastic clearing header of the through ball.

11′ Subotic and Durm collide challenging for a header and the senior centre-back is replaced by Felipe Santana.

16′ GS may be questioning the logic of a match this afternoon as Leonardo Bittencourt limps to the side for treatment.

17′ Lewandowski hits the inside of the post from 18 yards with a neat first-time strike which curls past Hohmann’s right hand.

19′ Bittencourt is back on and looks OK. He asks a question of Hohmann but the young ‘keeper has the answers, pushing his shot wide.

23′ Blaszczykowski doesn’t give up and chases down a deflected shot, picking out Reus in the six yard box with a cross but Reus’s first-touch is heavy and the ‘keeper gathers.

25′ Kevin Großkreutz cuts inside from the left but fires his shot straight at Hohmann, who is having a solid game for the second-string.

31′ Erik Durm snaps off a shot from the edge of the box and Roman Weidenfeller gets down quickly to tip it round the post.

35′ Felipe Santana involved at both ends in a matter of seconds. He heads a corner at Hohmann then gets back for a great challenge on a threatening Treude.

39′ Santana and Treude have another battle in the final third and Santana comes out on top again, Treude looks like he picked up a knock though.

Half-time: A couple of speculative efforts see out the first half where the players go into the break goalless. 0-0

46′ The senior side have made six changes at the break, while the under-23s have made nine changes of personnel:

46′ 1-0! The second half is only 27 seconds old when Julian Schieber runs onto Großkreutz’s through ball and fires past Almerovic. Impact sub!

56′ Final pair of changes for the senior side: Ivan Perisic and Marvin Bakalorz replace Großkreutz and Schmelzer respectively.

65′ Game slightly devoid of action, but the senior side are, predictably, first to most balls and creating half-chances.

74′ Jakub Blaszczykowski is the most threatening senior player this afternoon, and his cross-come-shot squirms across the goal area, Schmelzer keeps it alive and wins a corner. Delivery from the corners hasn’t been great so far though. Something to work on this summer.

78′ 2-0! Chris Löwe collects a wayward goal kick and breaks down the left. His square ball is perfect for Jakub Blaszczykowski to slam home at the far post:

82′ Schieber and Perisic cause confusion in the box before Zeugner takes control and hammers the ball clear.

82′ 3-0! The throw-in routine isn’t dealt with and Bakalorz touches the ball back to Ivan Perisic on the edge of the D. He takes a touch and finds the top corner:

86′ 4-0! Perisic turns provider, flighting his freekick to the far post where Marvin Bakalorz peels away and nods home a fourth:

89′ 5-0! Jakub Blaszczykowski picks up the ball on the right from Bakalorz, beats his man and drills a shot past Almerovic:

Full time: Dortmund’s first-choice XI huffed and puffed but ultimately left it to their second-choice to blow away the under-23s after the interval. 5-0
