Italy beat Brazil 3-1 at the Confederations Cup to progress through to the semi-final stage with a 100% record. Two first-half goals from Alberto Aquilani and a Mario Balotelli strike put the Italians three-up before the hosts –  who finished the game with nine-men due to two late injuries – grabbed a consolation through Rafael.

Brazil had already qualified alongside Italy, and are likely to face Spain in the semi-finals. In the other Group A game, Japan beat Tahiti 3-0.

Group B will conclude tomorrow with Spain already through to the last four and only needing a point from Zambia to win the group. The victors of Mexico-Uruguay will join them.

UEFA U-21s Championship:

Spain beat Israel 3-1 in their final Group A game to win the group, curiously winning all three matches 3-1. Meanwhile, England and Italy shared six goals between them in a 3-3 draw which saw both teams finish on the same record. England join Spain in the semi-finals after a shootout success. Group B is still wide open and tomorrow’s matches – Germany v. Sweden, Russia v. France – will decide everything.
