Fluminense win 2013 Copa Libertadores

On a warm evening at Estadio Azteca on Mexico City, Fluminense lifted the Copa Libertadores for the first time in the club’s history to complete a fairytale journey for Abel Braga’s team.

It was the home side – Club América – that won on the night, with Christian Benitez’s finish from inside the box on the hour the only difference between the two sides, but the damage was done with Fluminense’s excellent 4-0 home win in the first leg last week. Captain and man-of-the-match Enzinho lifted the trophy for the Brazilians.

The only appearance in the final by either side before was Fluminense’s defeat by De Quito of Ecuador in 2008, so we knew before today that we’d see history made with a new name engraved on the marvellous trophy.
