Manager’s Pre-Match Press Conference

Dortmund manager Grayson Surman took several questions about team selection and the build-up to the club’s Bundesliga opener at VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday.  Surman fielded questions from Dortmund Football Daily, the Gazette, the Express, GFD and Football Review.

journalist70Andreas Holtz, Dortmund Daily
“Do you have a clear idea in mind of your
preferred first eleven for this season?”

“I would not be much of a manager if I didn’t!
Everything is set and ready to go!”

Gregor Wolf, The Gazette
“It’s always nice to start with a win to get points on the board and build up some momentum. Are you confident you can get off to a good start?”

“We’ve been working hard and, if the players carry that focus and determination into the match, we’ll do well.”

journalist70Hermann Bach, Football Daily
“Most pundits suggest that Mats Hummels‘ performances will be the key factor in determining whether you have a successful season or not. Is that a fair assessment?”

“I think our squad is a strong one but clearly Mats has enormous quality and will be a massive contributor to any success we have. He’s my captain.”

journalist70Gregor Wolf, The Gazette
“Elsewhere, Schalke face Nürnberg looking for a win to start their season on a high. Do you reckon they can go all the way and win the title?”

“I don’t see this being their year.
I’m confident we’ll wrestle the title back from Bayern.”

journalist70Paul Weiß, German Football Review
“Recent reports have linked you with a move for Frankfurt’s Sebastian Rode. Can you go on record with your thoughts on this story?”

“It is unlikely that we will make a move for him at this time.
We’ll have a new arrival after the weekend, and that’s us done.”

journalist70Paul Weiß, German Football Review
“The draw for the cup has been rather kind to you – Heidenheim, a considerably weaker opponent. Is that an assessment you agree with?”

“I think it’s been favourable and gives us a great chance of progressing, but we shouldn’t underestimate them after knocking out Köln last week.”

journalist70Hermann Bach, Football Daily
“The opening day of the domestic season is marked on the calendars of football fans all across the country and, after a long close season, everybody is raring to go. Are you excited?”

“It is great to get the league under way – I’ve been looking forward to this. The cup was great, this weekend will be, as will the first home game.”

journalist70Gregor Wolf, The Gazette
“You’ve had the off-season to prepare your team and all that’s left is to kick off the campaign. Are you confident that your team are ready?”

“We had a great pre-season, we’re fully prepared and confident of a win.
The new signings are well-liked in the dressing room, the squad is ready.”

journalist70Leon Horn, The Express
“One word answer. Gut instinct…
Who do you think will win Bundesliga this season?”

“Can I use two words instead?
Borussia Dortmund.”
