Podolski’s £20m 88th-Minute Playoff Goal


Lukas Podolski scored with a little over two minutes to play to separate Arsenal and Galatasaray after almost-two full goalless matches in their UEFA Champions League Playoff tie. The goal puts Arsenal into the Group Stage 1-0 on aggregate, where they’ll be set to earn close to £20m in prize money, broadcasting rights and gate receipts.

FC Twente blew Sporting Lisbon away 3-0 in their own backyard to turn around a two-goal deficit from the first leg and progress 4-3 on aggregate.

The only German representatives at this stage, Vfb Stuttgart have had their European campaign ended after a 1-2 defeat in St Petersburg.

Five other Playoff ties are scheduled tomorrow.
