Mario Gómez’s extra-time goal was enough for Bayern Munich to break down a resolute Montpellier side in Prague tonight to lift the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in the club’s history, after three previous appearances in the competition. Bayern are the first German club to lift the trophy, and the first non-Spaniard winners since Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.
Preview: Prague is set to host the 2013 UEFA Super Cup between Europa League winners Montpellier and Champions League winners Bayern Munich, who coincidentally both beat teams from North London to be here tonight.
Montpellier are three matches into their domestic campaign in France, with one win, one draw and one defeat currently putting them 8th in the Ligue 1 table. The club, who beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 back in May, are struggling with injuries at an early stage, with no less than eight players unavailable tonight.
Bayern Munich have a clear bill of health and following their defeat in the DFB Supercup final to Bayer Leverkusen, will be looking to claim their first piece of silverware in what is being tipped to be another successful season. Bayern cruised past Arsenal 3-0 in the Champions League Final, though aided by an early Arsenal dismissal.
