Champions League: Matchday #1 (A-D)

The Group Stage of the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League has begun, with eighteen goals being scored in the opening eight matches from Groups A-D. Game of the day was at White Hart Lane where Barcelona gave new manager Tito Vilanova the perfect birthday present with a 2-0 away win.

David Villa opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Spurs ‘keeper Hugo Lloris came to claim a Lionel Messi long ball, but got beaten to it by Villa who rounded him and slotted home from an angle.

English champions Tottenham genuinely created more chances than the visitors throughout the game, but were undone when Jermaine Defoe was beaten for pace down the left. Barcelona quickly broke and a ball forward to Messi who took a touch twenty yards out and slotted underneath Lloris.

David Villa’s goal wasn’t the earliest of the round though, as Wout Brama scored a few seconds earlier to give Twente a 1-0 win over Inter Milan. Elsewhere, Joe Ledley’s sending-off moments after a Celtic equaliser in their home match with Paris St. Germain proved costly as PSG made the numerical advantage count, and travelled back to the French capital with a 2-1 win.
