Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 Dortmund (Bundesliga)


League leaders Bayer Leverkusen kept up their 100% start to the season after a edging a five-goal thriller at the BayArena on Sunday afternoon. BVB were furious when Julian Schieber had his 6th minute opener disallowed for an apparent foul on the home goalkeeper. After a period of pressure, the hosts took the lead when André Schürrle got to a cross ahead of Roman Weidenfeller.

lewandowskiBVB drew level against the run of play after 37 minutes when Robert Lewandowski scored his 7th goal in 6 games, and were inches away from taking the lead within twenty seconds of the second half starting through Moritz Leitner.

Viktor Fischer slotted home his first goal for the club on the hour mark to put the visitors in front, but Philipp Wollscheid headed home a corner 90 seconds later to restore parity. Junior Fernandes won the game with a near-post header on 76 minutes.

BVB Assistant Manager Zeljko Buvac attended the post-match press conference and voiced his disagreement with the disallowed goal, before supporting Andreas Beck who was given a torrid time by André Schürrle for an hour or so.

[06] Beck delivers a fantastic cross from the right which Schieber rises above Leno to head home, but the flag’s up on the far side. Replays show onside, decision given for a foul on the ‘keeper. BVB will feel aggrieved by that. Großkreutz gives the lino an earful.

[46] BVB nearly take the lead inside 20s of the restart. Schieber crosses low from the right, Fischer’s effort saved at near post and Moritz Leitner has his shot from 5 yards out blocked on the line by Rofles. Cracking start to the second half!

Dortmund were frankly appalling for the opening half-hour, prompting manager Surman to make two changes before the break and start to win more of the battles in midfield. The early disallowed goal rattled the visitors and their composure went as Leverkusen were given far too much space in front of the back four.
