Porto are the first side to book their place in the First Knockout Round of this season’s UEFA Champions League following their 3-1 win over Danish champions Copenhagen. Souza put them in front after just twelve minutes, with second-half goals from José Callejón and Kléber sealing victory before a late consolation from the visitors.
Schalke missed a chance to leapfrog Copenhagen after being held 1-1 at Neftçi Baku, a fortnight after demolishing them 10-1 at home. With Copenhagen and Schalke playing each other in three weeks’ time, it’s impossible for both to overtake Porto in Group B.
Elsewhere, Waris Majeed scored a hat-trick for Twente as they went top of Group A with a 5-1 win over Spartak Moscow. Manchester United had Fábio Coentrão and Michael Carrick sent-off within two minutes of each other during a stormy 1-1 Group C draw at Dynamo Kyiv, both for their second yellow.
Glamour tie of the night came in Group D with Barcelona hosting Paris Saint-Germain and running out 2-0 winners thanks to a goal from Cesc Fabregas and a howler of an error from ‘keeper Salvatore Sirigu fumbling the ball into his own net. Though Barca will face the next three months without Fabregas (broken arm) and Sergio Busquets (ankle) after both suffered serious injuries. They join Xavi and Eric Abidal as long-term absentees for the Spanish giants. Spurs beat Celtic 1-0 to ensure a three-way tie with teams on 7 points each.
