SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2013: Liga MX has finished the 17-match league phase of the “Opening Stage”, and now the top eight sides will contest a knock-out tournament to determine the 2013 Opening Stage champion.

Puebla de la Franja were the biggest winners on the final day of league action, beating Pachuca 3-0 at home to leapfrog them and CD León (who lost at struggling Monterray) and seal a quarter-final spot. 2012/13 double-winners Chivas Guadalajara finished four points adrift of the top eight after three draws and a defeat in their last five matches.

The Quarter-Finals are set to take place over two legs next week:

  • Pachuca v. Club América
  • Puebla v. Santos Laguna
  • Atlante v. Tigres
  • Toluca v. Cruz Azul


In the light of failing to make the cut, Mario Carillo has been fired by Punas UNAM after just 16 months in charge.The club finished 3rd in the 2012/13 Closing Stage, but  ended this stage 15th of 18 clubs.

Elsewhere, Napoli have fired Walter Mazzarri after their 1-2 defeat at Palermo. Napoli, who won the Italian League  Cup in 2012, are 10th in Serie A after a run of six matches without a win  in the league, though they do sit in 2nd in their Europa League group.

Getafe have announced that Lucas Alcaraz as their new manager.
