THURSDAY 12 DECEMBER 2013: Bayern Munich have become the first side through to the last eight of the DFB-Pokal after a 2-0 home win over VfL Wolfsburg tonight. First-half goals from Xherdan Shaqiri and Javi Martínez gave Bayern their first win in six games and seal a quarter-final place. The remaining seven Third Round ties are scheduled for next Wednesday.

clubworldcup-trophy70Invited side Zamalek beat Waitakere United of New Zealand 3-1 in the Playoff of the FIFA Club World Cup last night in Rabat, Morocco. Graham Simpkins put the reigning O-League champions ahead after seven minutes, but Zamalek equalised within fifty seconds through Shikabala.

Ahmed Gaffar put the Egyptians in front ten minutes later, and Shikabala scored late-on to ensure their progress. Zamalek will be back in action in the first Quarter-Final on Friday, against CAF Champions League winners Mohgreb Tétouan of Morocco. The other match will be Kashima Antlers (Japan) against Tigres UANL (Mexico).

Werder Bremen have parted company with Pim Verbeek after a year in charge at Weserstadion. Despite still beign able to qualify for the last 32 of the Europa League, a 1-4 defeat at Hamburg yesterday – a fourth in five league games – was catalyst for chairman Willi Lemke to make the change with the club in 11th place in the Bundesliga.
