Erzgebirge Aue 1 – 3 Dortmund (Cup R3)

Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the quarter finals of the cup after a comfortable win at second-tier Aue, despite failing to keep a clean sheet for the fifth time in six matches.

Julian Schieber opened the scoring mid-way through the first half after a breakaway saw him clean-through when the home side pushed every outfield player forward at a corner. On 35 minutes, Sven Bender smashed home a loose ball after Schieber hit the post and the hosts failed to clear, to give Dortmund a two-goal lead at the break.

Mats Hummels headed home Dortmund’s eighteenth goal from a corner this season shortly after the interval, but his slip let Ronny König score a simple consolation five minutes later. Aue ended the game with seven players in the book, though it was Dortmund who finished the game with ten men as Sven Bender sat out the last couple of minutes with a dead leg.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas was at the match, sparking rumours that he was taking  closer look at Sven Bender. The match was Dortmund’s last competitive fixture for a month, with the winter break now upon us.

Match report by @realtimeFM:

[00] The home side kick-off against a Dortmund side who’ve made seven changes from their weekend 3-1 win over Frankfurt. Sven Bender and Taye Taiwo are both back from injury, alongside Santana, Koch, Gündogan, Fischer and Götze.

[01] Six other Third Round ties are being played today, and there’s been a goal in the opening minute at Kickers Offenbach, who are 0-1 down to Dinamo Dresden thanks to Sascha Dum’s goal. The other match was Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win over Wolfsburg last week.

[02] Dortmund have started brightly, both Marco Reus and Ilkay Gündogan have had shots from tange after good midfield work, but neither troubled the ‘keeper.

[07] Klingbeil knocks the ball behind for the first corner of the game. Taiwo and Koch, the Dortmund full-backs, are both creating time and space to whip dangerous crosses in.

[09] Thomas Paulus takes away Julian Schieber’s legs right on the edge of the area. He’s cautioned for the challenge. Marco Reus bends the free-kick around the wall but he’s just off-target.

[11] First touch for Roman Weidenfeller as he takes a goal-kick. Ronny König tried a lob from 30 yards but it was always heading over, as Aue broke on the counter.

[14] Männel tips an Gündogan shot over the bar. Santana’s header from the corner is dropping in but cleared off the line, and Taiwo can’t force the loose ball on target. Deflected for another corner that Hummels meets but skims the top of the bar.

[15] Quarter of an hour gone in all tonight’s ties, with eight goals across the seven games. Augsburg have the lead over Hannover, Hoffenheim are 0-2 down and reduced to 10 men at home to Düsseldorf, Hamburg are two-up over St Pauli, Kaiserslautern are beating Bielefeld 1-0, and Dinamo Dresden are now 2-0 up at Offenbach. It’s goalless between Karslruhe and Nürnberg, and here too of course.

[17] Corner for Aue. Hummels makes a challenge on Zoundi. Cleared away by Santana and Dortmund regain possession.

[21] Taye Taiwo makes a challenge on Patrick Zoundi and the Aue winger goes down like he’s been shot. Minimal contact if any, but it doesn’t stop the Dortmund player going in the book.

[22] Reus heads the free-kick away, and Schieber catches Schrammel in possession as the last man back for Aue. Schieber is clean through as he crosses the halfway line…

[22] 1-0 DORTMUND! Suicidal over-commitment of men forward for Aue, and Julian Schieber has the easiest of jobs to surge forwards before slamming the ball home from the edge of the box for his 19th of the season.

[23] Goals in every tie tonight as Nürnberg have the lead at Karlsruhe now too.

[26] Taiwo finds Schieber in space on the edge of the box and he sends a lovely ball through to Marco Reus but the defender makes a good challenge. Santana heads the corner just over the top, clipping the bar on the way.

[35] 2-0 DORTMUND! Aue can’t clear a corner, giving Julian Schieber two chances to force the ball towards goal. The first is blocked, the second hits the far post, and in the resuming scramble, Sven Bender slams the ball home from eight yards out.

[40] Dortmund utterly in control here this evening. The lion’s share of possession, and dominating all the key stats. If they get a third before half-time, you feel that Aue could crumble.

[43] Halil Savran is cautioned after he goes down theatrically in the area under a challenge from Felipe Santana. Yellow card for the dive.

[45] Two additional minutes.

[45+2] Marco Reus sends the ball over from ten yards out.

HALF-TIME: Erzgebirge Aue 0-2 Borussia Dortmund (DFB-Pokal Third Round)

[HT] DFB POKAL THIRD ROUND HALF-TIMES: Aue 0-2 Dortmund, Augsburg 2-0 Hannover, Hoffenheim 1-3 Düsseldorf, Hamburg 2-0 St Pauli, Kaiserslautern 1-0 Bielefeld, Kalsruhe 0-2 Nürnberg, Offenbach 0-2 Dresden. RESULT: Bayern Munich 2-0 Wolfsburg.

[HT] Substitution¹ for Aue: Ronald Gercaliu comes on for Oliver Schröder (6.1) at right-back.

[46] Second half kicks off, Aue attack from the off, and Halil Savran goes down under another challenge from Felipe Santana. No foul, nothing more.

[48] Marc Hensel becomes the third Aue player in the book after he’s late sliding in on Julian Schieber.

[52] Julian Schieber is replaced by Kevin Großkreutz for Dortmund’s first change¹ of the match. He’s been on the end of some heavy challenges today. Viktor Fischer will go up-front. Dortmund win a corner soon after.

[53] 3-0 DORTMUND! Mats Hummels rises highest at the near post and flicks home Ilkay Gündogan’s corner. 18 goals from corners for Dortmund this season.

[55] Paulus heads behind a cross from Koch. As the ball is cleared away, Viktor Fischer is fouled on the edge of the box. Marco Reus bends the free-kick wide, but the Dortmund bench looks concerned for Fischer.

[57] Thomas Schrammel is booked for a foul on Marco Reus. Moments later, René Klingbeil joins him for a foul on Taiwo. Thee’s some activity on the Dortmund bench, Ivan Perisic looks like he’s about to come on.

[58] GOAL FOR ERZGEBIRGE! Mats Hummels slips as he goes to clear a Schrammel cross, which lands at the feet of Ronny König. He’s got the easiest of tasks to take a touch then slam home from close range.

[58] Second substitution for Dortmund²: Ivan Perisic replaces Viktor Fischer (6.2).

[66] Jan Hochscheidt is cautioned, Aue’s sixth of the match.

[68] Double change²³ for Aue: Skerdilaid Curri and Guido Kocer replace Patrick Zoundi (5.6) and Simon Cziommer (6.4).

[72] Seventh booking now, Guido Koçer.

[75] Petering out here, Dortmund comfortable on the ball but not playing decisive killer balls into the box.

[76] Third change for Dortmund³: Dennis Praet replaces Ilkay Gündogan (8.6) – BVB’s best player today.

[80] At Hoffenheim, the ten-man home side have come back from two-down to level it at 3-3, what a game! Elsewhere, Augsburg, Hamburg, Kaiserslautern, Nürnberg, and Dinamo Dresden are all winning.

[83] Skerdilaid Curri a little fortunate to escape a caution after a reckless foul on Dennis Praet.

[85] Thomas Paulus is one of the seven Aue players on a yellow card and he catches Ivan Perisic late as the Croatian breaks over half-way…

[85] …no further action. The foul count is 20-8 against the home side.

[86] Marc Hensel and Sven Bender collide in mid-air. The Dortmund man came off second-best there.

[89] Two additional minutes. Sven Bender has left the pitch and Dortmund will finish the game with ten men, when ironically it’s the home side who probably should.
