MONDAY 06 JANUARY 2014: “Having Robert [Lewandowski] back fit is like a new signing in itself,” said Dortmund manager Gray Surman this morning as the Polish striker is set to return from injury after a three-month lay-off with a torn calf muscle.
The injury was suffered in the last minute of stoppage time during Poland’s 3-2 World Cup Qualifying win over Montenegro in October, and Lewandowski has missed 16 Dortmund senior fixtures. During his absence, Julian Schieber has led the way for Dortmund, scoring 20 goals in his 18 starts this season.
Dortmund have a budget of around £11m to spend during the January transfer window, though it looks unlikely that new faces will arrive at Signal Iduna Park unless someone leaves. Surman indicated that the budget may be restructured to offer more favourable contract terms to those players set to receive renewal offers.
Houston Dynamo manager Dominic Kinnear has confirmed that he has resigned from his position at the BBVA Compass Stadium after eight years, to take the reins at Los Angeles Galaxy following the retirement of Bruce Arena last month.
