Energie Cottbus 2-1 Dortmund (Friendly)

matchheader_cottbus-friendly

Dortmund suffered their first defeat in 21 matches going down 1-2 at FC Energie Cottbus this evening, as the home side took two of very few chances while BVB were denied by the woodwork, fantastic goalkeeping and patches of bad luck and inaccurate finishing.

Surman sent out an entirely different starting XI to that which began the 5-0 win at Rhede on Saturday, giving Josef Bungert a start alongside Viktor Fischer up-front, though Robert Lewandowski wasn’t passed match fit.

The home side took the lead in the eighth minute when Ivica Banovic crashed home a fantastic 22-yard free-kick off the underside of the crossbar and past Roman Weidenfeller. The rest of the half passed with some heavy challenges from the hosts, but Dortmund were unable to draw level in an otherwise even first half.

At the break, Surman shuffled the pack and Dortmund took the game by the scruff of the neck but were stunned when Martin Fenin got a touch to a cross from the left to poke Cottbus 2-0 up in the 53rd minute.

Mats Hummels converted from the spot five minutes later after Marco Reus was felled in the area, but despite a further twenty efforts at goal, BVB couldn’t muster an equaliser. Dortmund are back in action at Lotte – where they won 3-0 in July – on Saturday for their final winter friendly.

Match report by @realtimeFM:

The 23-man squad is the same, but it’s an entirely different starting XI from that which began the match at Rhede on Saturday, which saw Dortmund run out 5-0 victors. Josef Bungert partners Viktor Fischer in a two-striker formation, his first start for the club.

“Cottbus can’t pick up a win from anywhere at the moment, let alone at home. I think this match will be Dortmund all the way and we should see a few goals.” – Ung Sokunthea, European Football Express.

[00] Dortmund start the match, kicking from right-to-left if you’re facing the dugouts.

[01] Every Dortmund player has had a touch of the ball within the first forty seconds.

[04] First half-chance falls to Viktor Fischer. Leitner finds him in space on the edge of the box, but the Danish footballer of the year drags his shot wide from 18 yards out.

[08] Martin Fenin is in behind the BVB back four and Weidenfeller has to make a smart save to deny the striker. The ball squirms loose and is only half-cleared. Andreas Beck trips Stiepermann on the edge of the box. Free kick in a dangerous area.

[08] 1-0 COTTBUS! Ivica Banovic curls the free-kick around the wall and it crashes home off the underside of the cross bar past the diving Roman Weidenfeller. Top drawer free-kick.

[11] Taye Taiwo is receiving treatment after a heavy challenge. The Dortmund left-back hasn’t had the greatest of seasons so far.

[14] Ludwig is giving Katsouranis a job to do at the moment, got past him twice now and swung the ball into the box. The 10th placed second division side are having the better of the opening exchanges.

[17] Fischer tries to lob Kirschbaum from 25 yards out but the ball drops a couple of yards wide.

[20] Cottbus not holding back in the challenge here today. While BVB are happy to play a second-string side and keep match fitness up, Cottbus know there’s a scalp to be had today.

[20] Cottbus win the first corner. Beck heads behind Ludwig’s cross from the right. Looks like BVB are shuffling the pack a little, Fischer moving out to the left.

[21] Cottbus bundle the ball into the back of the net after the corner gets swung in at the second attempt but Weidenfeller has been shoved and it’s rightly chalked off.

[25] Second corner. Ludwig again down the right, he’s chalenged by Taiwo. It’s headed away and Kevin Großkreutz has the chance to launch a counter, but he runs into trouble and the threat is snuffed out as Cottbus get men back.

[27] Third corner, Hornschuh puts a ball behind from the left. Away it goes.

[30] Half hour played, possession is 55-45% in BVB’s favour, but they’ve not managed a shot on target yet. Cottbus have managed three from five efforts.

[32] Ludwig again gets away down the right, Taiwo can’t stop him. Marc Hornschuh is on hand to hammer his cross away.

[36] Fantastic full-stretch save by Roman Weidenfeller to tip a thunderous drive from Banovic on the edge of the box. That was hurtling in to the top corner.

[39] Dennis Praet whips a free-kick into the box and Viktor Fischer gets his header on target but it’s well-held by the home ‘keeper.

[41] Fischer heads towards goal again, Beck putting in the cross this time.

[43] Kevin Großkreutz hits a half-volley from fifteen yards out but it skews wide. BVB’s wide players starting to create space and chances.

[45] Josef Bungert slams a shot towwards goal, blocked on the line, Dennis Praet is upended on the edge of the box as he hits the rebound. Cottbus clear while the Dortmund bench appeal in vain.

[90] Three minutes for Cottbus to hold on. They make a double change to eat up some time: René Trehkopf and Nicolas Farina come on for Rippert (7.0) and Fandrich (7.0).

[90] Julian Koch finds himself in acres of space and with the ball at his feet, he runs towards goal but has his effort saved by the feet of the ‘keeper. It’s scrambled away.

[92] Pinball in the Cottbus penalty area but eventually hammered away. Ninety seconds to go.

[93] Reus has another go from just inside the area, which is pushed awayy and turned behind. Twenty seconds left on the clock, and even Roman Weidenfeller is up for this corner, Dortmund’s eighth.

[93] Subotic flicks it on at the near post, it’s knocked out and Weidenfeller has an effort which sails high over the top. That’s it! Cottbus become the first team in 21 matches to beat Borussia Dortmund.
