Dortmund suffered their first defeat in 21 matches going down 1-2 at FC Energie Cottbus this evening, as the home side took two of very few chances while BVB were denied by the woodwork, fantastic goalkeeping and patches of bad luck and inaccurate finishing.
Surman sent out an entirely different starting XI to that which began the 5-0 win at Rhede on Saturday, giving Josef Bungert a start alongside Viktor Fischer up-front, though Robert Lewandowski wasn’t passed match fit.
The home side took the lead in the eighth minute when Ivica Banovic crashed home a fantastic 22-yard free-kick off the underside of the crossbar and past Roman Weidenfeller. The rest of the half passed with some heavy challenges from the hosts, but Dortmund were unable to draw level in an otherwise even first half.
At the break, Surman shuffled the pack and Dortmund took the game by the scruff of the neck but were stunned when Martin Fenin got a touch to a cross from the left to poke Cottbus 2-0 up in the 53rd minute.
Mats Hummels converted from the spot five minutes later after Marco Reus was felled in the area, but despite a further twenty efforts at goal, BVB couldn’t muster an equaliser. Dortmund are back in action at Lotte – where they won 3-0 in July – on Saturday for their final winter friendly.

The 23-man squad is the same, but it’s an entirely different starting XI from that which began the match at Rhede on Saturday, which saw Dortmund run out 5-0 victors. Josef Bungert partners Viktor Fischer in a two-striker formation, his first start for the club.
“Cottbus can’t pick up a win from anywhere at the moment, let alone at home. I think this match will be Dortmund all the way and we should see a few goals.” – Ung Sokunthea, European Football Express.
