PREVIEW: Surman has taken a 21-man squad to Sportfreunde Lotte for their third and final friendly during the winter break ahead of Bundesliga action resuming next Saturday. Lotte were the first away trip of Surman’s reign when he took over in the summer, with a 3-0 win back in July.

It’s a strong line-up, with Hummels, Bender, Gündogan, Reus, Götze, and Schieber all starting. Lewandowski misses out on the squad and looks set to be unavailable for a further week after recovery from his long-term ankle injury continues.

Match report by @realtimeFM:

“Dortmund won’t even have to be at their best to see off Lotte. I can’t see any other winner in this game and Dortmund could win by 3 or 4 goals. Lotte’s task will not be made any easier by the absence of Amir Shapourzadeh.” – Ung Sokunthea, European Football Express.

[00] Dortmund get us underway in their all-yellow kit, in the driving rain here at the ConnectM-Arena.

[01] 1-0 DORTMUND! Julian Schieber and Dennis Praet kick-off, playing the ball back to Ilkay Gündogan who pops the ball forwards for Schieber to run on to. He hits the post with a curling shot from 22 yards out before Praet slides home the rebound from close range with just 19 seconds played.

[01] It seems Simon Engelmann hurt himself making a challenge on Praet for the goal. He’s replaced by Henning Greineisen.

[05] Ivan Perisic nods a cross wide from twelve yards out. Lotte shocked by that early goal.

[07] Marco Reus plays Dennis Praet in on a tight angle but the young Belgian can’t get his shot away cleanly and it’s cleared away at the near post.

[08] 2-0 DORTMUND! Marco Reus holds up the ball by the corner flag long enough to find Andreas Beck whose cross is headed home off the underside of the bar by Ivan Perisic to double the BVB lead.

[12] Dortmund win a corner when Perisic gets away down the left but his cross is turned behind.

[12] 3-0 DORTMUND! Dennis Praet floats the corner into the six yard box, Mats Hummels drags his marker away allowing Felipe Santana a free header which nestles into the far corner past the man on the line for a third.

[15] Marco Reus’s run ends when he lays it back to Sven Bender 25 yards out. The midfielder smashes it towards goal, ‘keeper is beaten, but it grazes the top of the bar on its way over. That would have been some goal.

[21] Andreas Beck clips a cross in to the far post for Julian Schieber, but his header drops half a yard wide.

[23] First effort at goal for the hosts, but Radke slices it well wide from outside the area.

[24] Hummels steps up, but Santana doesn’t and Chahed beats the Dortmund offside trap. Santana makes a good challenge to block the eventual shot towards goal. Schmelzer clears up.

[30] Lotte are packing the penalty area whenever Dortmund get the ball forwards. Their only chances seem like long balls over the high Dortmund line.

[36] Reus and Beck combine again down the right, and Julian Schieber’s header from the cross is tipped over by the home ‘keeper. Corner is only cleared as far away as Gündogan on the edge of the box. His shot is parried away well for BVB’s third corner.

[39] 4-0 DORTMUND! Ronny Surman heads away Andreas Beck’s cross, but it drops 25 yards out for Sven Bender who hits it on the volley perfectly, slamming it into the roof of the net. Stunning strike.

[44] No real action to report since the fourth until a chance drops for Bender in a similar position. He opts to curl it ahead of power, and it bends half a yard wide.

[45] After one additional minute, there’s the half-time whistle. BVB utterly in control with two-thirds of the possession, and Dennis Praet creating chances aplenty.

[HT] Lotte have made two chances at the break: Julian Westermann and Danijel Gataric have replaced Loose (6.7) and Radke (5.8) in attack. Gataric takes the captain’s armband.

[46] We’re back underway, no changes for Dortmund at the break.

[47] Corner for Dortmund when Beck’s cross is headed away, but inexplicably nodded behind by a second defender under no pressure.

[48] 5-0 DORTMUND! Felipe Santana gets away from his man at the near post and heads Praet’s corner delivery home for BVB’s fifth. Corners are deadly for Dortmund opponents this season.

[54] Schmelzer’s deep cross is headed behind for another Dortmund corner.

[57] 6-0 DORTMUND! Borussia Dortmund win their sixth corner and Felipe Santana heads home his third goal from ten yards out as Mario Götze whips it towards the penalty spot. Hat-trick! That’s 21 goals from corners in BVB’s 28 matches this season.

[78] Marcus Fischer makes room for himself and has a go at goal from the edge of the area but it’s blocked by both BVB centre-backs and danger is snuffed out.

[82] Neven Subotic, Taye Taiwo and goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller all come on for Dortmund, replacing Hummels (8.8), Schmelzer (8.5) and Langerak (7.4), meaning that Marco Reus will be the only player on the Dortmund side to play all 90 minutes.

[86] Marcus Fischer has glorious chance to score for Lotte after a through-ball is knocked out wide. He cuts inside his man but the shot is woeful.

[90]  Leitner has a pop from 25 yards but it’s always curling away.

FULL-TIME: Sportfreunde Lotte 0-7 Borussia Dortmund (Friendly)

A professional performance from a strong Dortmund side who were shell-shocked by the midweek defeat at Energie Cottbus. Santana’s hat-trick will take the headlines, but they dominated throughout, with Marco Reus being particularly impressive. Competitive football returns next week with the visit of Wolfsburg.
