AFC U22 Championship Kicks-Off in Oman


The delayed, inaugural, 2013 Asian Football Confederation Under-22 Championship has finally kicked-off over the weekend in Oman after being postponed due to the EAFF East Asian Cup. Sixteen nations from the AFC have qualified for the tournament, split into four equal groups in the standard round-robin then knockout format:

  • (A) Japan, Oman, Bahrain, Thailand
  • (B) China, North Korea, South Korea, Chinese Taipai
  • (C) Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Iran, Syria
  • (D) Astralia, Jordan, Qatar, Lebanon

Results so far:

  • Japan 9-1 Thailand, Oman 0-0 Bahrain
  • Syria 0-2 Iran, Saudi Arabia 2-1 Turkmenistan
  • China 2-2 South Korea, Chinese Taipei 0-3 North Korea
  • Australia 3-1 Lebanon, Jordan 0-1 Qatar
  • Thailand 2-2 Oman, Bahrain 0-5 Japan
  • Turkmenistan 2-0 Syria, Iran 0-2 Saudi Arabia

aminiDortmund have a representative at the tournament in the shape of Mustafa Amini. The attacking midfielder, currently on loan at Union Berlin, is with the Australian squad and played the full 90 minutes in the 3-1 win over Lebanon.
