Werder Bremen 0-0 Dortmund (Bundesliga)

Dortmund failed to win for two consecutive matches for the first time under Surman’s management, having been held to an entertaining, if goalless, draw at Werder Bremen. The match was one of two tonight in the Bundesliga and was BVB’s game-in-hand over fierce rivals Schalke.

BVB started the brighter of the two sides, but both exchanged efforts at goal for the first-half which left both sides evenly-matched. The second-half saw the introduction of Robert Lewandowski for his first action with the senior squad since October, but BVB were unable to make a breakthrough and may even have to concede that as they ran out of steam, the hosts had the better of the closing stages.

Substitute Kevin Großkreutz did have the ball in the back of the net mid-way through the second-half but had it rightly chalked-off for his shirt-pull on Prödl as both men stretched to get on the end of a Jakub Blaszczykowski cross.

The 0-0 draw keeps Dortmund top, with the lead extended to three points. They travel to Fürth on Sunday, who lost 2-0 at Bayern Munich tonight (who jump back into the top four). Surman left the post-match press conference to Assistant Zeljko Buvac, but was reportedly happy that the club had kept their first clean-sheet in seven league games.

Match report by @realtimeFM:

An unchanged Dortmund play their game-in-hand at 10th-placed Werder Bremen, with the change to open a five-point gap over their fierce rivals Schalke at the top of the table. The other match tonight is Bayern Munich hosting troubled Fürth.

[00] Dortmund kick-off here at the Weserstadion and attack from the off, Ivan Perisic makes a good run down the left that’s headed away. Götze wins a corner off Fritz.

[01] Hummels’s header is deflected behind. Corner. Second delivery cleared away, and a shot blocked to safety.

[03] Marcel Schmelzer is booked after a shove on Aleksandar Ignjovski.

[07] Fast-paced start to the game so far, both sides having chances ruled out by the offside flag.

[09] Dortmund don’t clear a Junuzovic shot, and a second one gets fired back in the box which Weidenfeller saves with his feet. Hummels and Schmelzer combine to hack the ball away.

[17] Dortmund win their third corner when Prödl has to intercept a Schieber lob that’s dropping over Mielitz in the home goal.

[17] It’s cleared away and Ignjovski sweeps the ball forwards for Chibuike to run on to. One-on-one, Reus is the only Dortmund man back.
Reus gets across to make the challenge and BVB escape.

[19] Corner for Dortmund, number four. Götze has to get a better delivery this time. He does, and Santana grazes the roof of the net with his header.

[23] Ilkay Günogan is cautioned by Wolfgang Stark for his late challenge on Prödl.

[28] Corner number five for Dortmund. Bedlam at the near post, but it’s hacked away.

[30] Mielitz makes a flamboyent save to deny Gündogan at full-stretch. Werder Bremen counter immediately and Chibuike puts a shot a few inches over the top from 20 yards.

[35] Bayern Munich have opened the scoring against Fürth with a goal from Thomas Müller.

[40] Dortmund and Werder Bremen are both going at each other with bursting runs from midfield, it’s end-to-end stuff. but no breakthrough yet. Dortmund do win their sixth corner though. Santana penalised for a push.

[43] Götze pushes Junozovic 25 yards out, dead central. Not a clever decision as we approach the break. The free-kick is hammered straight into the wall though.

[44] One additional minute.

HALF-TIME: Werder Bremen 0-0 Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga)

[HT] Change at the break for Dortmund¹: Kevin Großkreutz replaces Perisic (6.2). They’ll attack towards their own fans in this second-half.

[50] Prödl comes off second-best in an aerial collision with Großkreutz and will need treatment.

[51] Another corner won by Dortmund, Marco Reus runs down the right in the rain and plays the ball off the defender.

[53] Arnautovic brings the ball down on the edge of the area beautifully and hooks a sot towards the top corner. Weidenfeller keeps it out with his fingertips.

[54] The corner is cleared away and Jakub Blaszczykowski makes his first appearance for Dortmund after being recalled from his loan at Lille. He replaces² Reus (6.6).

[60] A Götze free-kick is headed behind for a corner. Nodded away and Großkreutz’s half-volley from the edge of the box is smartly saved.

[65] Dortmund make their third attacking change³ as Robert Lewandowski replaces Götze (6.7), he joins Schieber up-front.

[66] Denni Avdic has had a quiet game but he’s allowed to run at goal and Weidenfeller needs to make a good save to keep him out from 15 yards.

[70] Lewandowski plays a fantastic ball out wide for Blaszczykowski but can’t get on the end of the return cross.

[72] Kevin Großkreutz stretches and prods Blaszczykowski’s low cross past Mielitz from six yards out but he’s adjudged to have pulled down Prödl in his attempt. Goal disallowed.

[74] Arnautovic’s header whistles over the top of the bar when he meets Selassie’s cross at the near post ahead of Weidenfeller. Meanwhile, Luiz Gustavo has put Bayern Munich 2-0 up at home to Dortmund’s next opponents, Fürth.

[80] Into the final ten minutes for one side to claim a late winner.

[82] Andreas Beck makes a challenge to give Bremen a corner. Dortmund clear and counter but are hustled out of it as they work the ball into the box.

[83] Werder Bremen make a change¹: Aaron Hunt replaces Avdic (6.8).

[86] Ignjovski beats the Dortmund offside trap from a delightful through-ball from Arnautovic, but Weidenfeller is quick off his line to deny him.

[87] Another aerial challenge sees the visitors penalised, Surman throws his arms up in a dramatic sigh on the touchline.

[89] This could well be the last chance, as Großkreutz wins a corner for Dortmund down the left-hand side. Cleared away. Three minutes will be added on.

[91] Mielitz saves a Schieber shot at point-blank range when the striker gets on the end of a Großkreutz cross.

[93] It’s all over. Both sides will think they could have won this in the closing stages, but a point apiece is probably the fairest result. Felipe Santana wins the man-of-the-match award.
