Fürth 2-3 BVB (Bundesliga Report)

Living embodiment of perfection – Dennis Praet – slotted home after Ivan Perisic hit the crossbar with an audacious 30-yard free-kick to turn the match round for Dortmund, who had been behind twice, and come away from struggling Fürth with an invaluable 3-2 victory.

Fürth more than matched Dortmund for the first-half, and were worth their 2-1 lead at the break. Sercen Sararer was giving Taye Taiwo and Kevin Großkreutz a torrid time down the right, leading to the latter’s withdrawal at half-time. It was Sararer who put Fürth in front inside the opening ten minutes, and shortly after a Julian Schieber headed equaliser, Felix Klaus put the home side back in front as Dortmund showed their vulnerability to long-ball counter attacks.

Mario Götze was introduced at the break and dramatically improved Dortmund’s forward movement. It paid off when he and Perisic, now on the left, combined to win a corner. Julian Schieber headed home his, and Dortmund’s, second to draw the sides level again. Six minutes later and Denis Praet, on the pitch for just eight minutes, was first to react when Perisic hit the bar to score his first Bundesliga goal and snatch the win.

Surman made four changes to the starting XI that drew consecutive matches against Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen, protecting Sven Bender and Marcel Schmelzer who are both one caution away from a game ban, and starting Kevin Großkreutz ahead of Mario Götze. The other was an enforced change, with want-away ‘keeper Mitchell Langerak deputising for the injured Roman Weidenfeller.

Match report by @realtimeFM:

“Fürth can’t pick up a win from anywhere at the moment, let alone at home.  think this match will be Dortmund all the way and we should see a few goals. The home side are missing some key defensive figures tonight.” – Tom Wallace, World Soccer.

[00] Ivan Perisic and Julian Schieber exchange passes in the centre-circle to get us underway! The reverse fixture in September saw a goal inside three minutes as Dortmund strolled to a 3-0 victory.

[01] Fürth have a corner inside the opening thirty seconds as Sararer bursts away down the left, eventually closed down by Taiwo who deflects the ball behind. Hummels heads behind the cross, and gets the second corner away too.

[03] Sararer and Taiwo tangle by the touchline and Fürth have a free-kick and another chance to get the ball high into the Dortmund box. Hummels heads it behind, Taiwo gets the delivey away for a fourth corner. The pressure is lifted when referee Kinhöfer gives a foul at the far post.

[06] Schmidtgal clatters Reus 25 yards out. Perisic’s free-kick deflects off the wall for Dortmund’s first corner. Hummels’s header is hacked away at the far post.

[09] 1-0 FURTH! The home side take the lead inside the opening ten minutes when Felix Klaus brings the ball towards the edge of the Dortmund box, and neither centre-back applies any pressure. He slips the ball through to Sercan Sararer who takes a touch then slots past Langerak.

[10] Full-time in today’s other match was Mönchengladbach 0-0 Freiburg.

[12] Another corner for Fürth. BVB look at sixes and sevens at the back, Sararer is giving Taiwo the runaround.

[14] Sixth corner for Fürth. Movement down the left this time, but it comes to nothing.

[18] Mats Hummels loses his footing in the hail, and Sararer picks up the loose ball and runs into the Dortmund box, but is outmuscled by Felipe Santana.

[26] Gündogan and Reus pair-up well down Dortmund’s right-hand side but the eventual cross into the box is hammered away by Schmidtgal. Nothing’s getting past him so far this evening.

[28] Marco Reus puts the ball into the six-yard box but Ivan Perisic mis-cues his shot and it spins away.

[30] Ball breaks for Perisic on the left with no one to close him down, he sends the ball across the face of goal but Schieber can’t get on the end of it. Dortmund starting to up their game.

[33] Klaus stings Langerak’s palms with a 25-yarder. Corner after Gündogan closes the ball down.

[34] Julian Schieber picks out Kevin Großkreutz on the left and Dortmund pour forwards but the cross doesn’t beat the man at the near post.

[35] Mats Hummels meets the corner from Gündogan at the near post and it’s only a fingertip save from Grün that denies the Dotmund skipper an equaliser.

[38] EQUALISER FOR DORTMUND! A long throw from Ilkay Gündogan is put behind for a corner. He whips the delivery into the six-yard box. Mats Hummels nods it towards the far post and Julian Schieber steals in to nod past Grün.

[40] Schmidtgal goes through the back of Schieber by the corner flag, lucky to escape a caution. Luckier still when Santana’s header is cleared off the line.

[40] 2-1 FURTH! The clearance is hammered up-field and Felix Klaus has the entire of Dortmund’s half to run towards goal. Not a defender in sight when he slots past Langerak.

[45] Dortmund riding their luck at the end of this first-half, looked vulnerable down the left all this half. We’ll have one additional minute. It’ll close with another Fürth corner.

HALF-TIME: SpVgg Greuther Fürth 2-1 Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga)

[HT] Dortmund boss Surman looks aghast as he watches his team trudge off for the break, a goal-behind at a Fürth side. They just can’t handle Klaus and Sararer when they attack down the left.

[HT] Dortmund have made a change. Mario Götze replaces Großkreutz (5.9), with Perisic moving to the left.

[46] The second-half is underway, no changes for the home side.

[48] Ilkay Gündogan is slow to get to his feet after a heavy challenge in the middle.

[50] Second change² for Dortmund: Dennis Praet replaces Gündogan (7.3).

[51] Corner for Dortmund. Looking much more like the BVB we know now that Götze is on the park and Perisic moves left.

[52] EQUALISER, 2-2! Dennis Praet whips the corner in, Hummels nods it down for Götze to send right across the face of goal at pace where Julian Schieber bravely turns it home from six yards out. Game on!

[52] Substitution for Fürth¹: Ilir Azemi replaces Schipplock (6.1).

[58] 3-2 DORTMUND! Ivan Perisic smashes a 30-yard free-kick against the crossbar and Dennis Praet reacts first to slam the ball back towards goal and into the bottom corner. That’s his first goal in Bundesliga. Dortmund ahead for the first time tonight!

[64] Second change for Fürth²: Mergim Mavraj comes on for Bauer (5.7).

[68] Surman has been encouraging his Dortmund side to show a bit more bite in the challenge. Kostas Kasouranis gets a yellow for a challenge on Pekovic, first booking of the game. Fürth make their third change³: Bernd Nehrig replaces Starokin (6.8).

[71] Dennis Praet has had a couple of efforts from the edge of the box in the last couple of minutes. Both looping shots that Grün has had to backpeddle and clutch right on the line.

[72] Dortmund skipper Mats Hummels (7.6) is coming off³, being replaced by Neven SUbotic. Katsouranis takes the armband for the visitors.

[74] Praet works the ball to the near post where Schieber prods it towards goal, it’s stopped on the line and somehow Praet and Schieber have efforts kept out. Corner, though. Subotic’s header is saved.

[78] Ivan Perisic takes it round two defenders and gets to the goalline. It’s a narrow angle but just as he pulls the trigger, he’s challenged and Grün gathers.

[81] Inside the final ten minutes here, and no sane person would bet either way right now.

[82] Bernd Nehrig is cautioned for a foul on Katsouranis. Some crunching challenges flying in. Surman looks like he appreciates the bit of aggression his side are showing.

[83] Huge penalty appeals as Mavraj slides in on Schieber in the box. Corner given.

[85] Sercan Serarer and Taye Taiwo have been battling all evening, but after the Fürth man trips the defender, he gets a yellow card for his troubles. Dortmund win a corner from the set-piece.

[86] Another corner. 10-8 to Dortmund on that count now.

[89] Fürth defending resolutely, and hammering the ball forwards at every opportunity. Dortmund have an extra three minutes to cling on for an invaluable win.

[90+2] Ilir Azemi takes a touch and is in behind the back four, just Langerak to beat but he’s halted by the flag going up. Massive sigh of relief in the BVB technical area.

FULL-TIME: SpVgg Greuther Fürth 2-3 Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga)

Dortmund were shell-shocked going in at half-time a goal-down but battled hard in the second-half after stern words from Surman at the break. It wasn’t a tremendous performance over the course of 90 minutes, but the second-half was much more like the Dortmund we’ve seen all season.

There may be grumbles from the likes of Hummels and Subotic who played well while other defensive issues were exposed by a fearless Fürth side, but the important thing is that Dortmund re-open a three-point gap over Schalke at the top of the table.

Kostas Katsouranis may miss the next match after he got caught by a flailing arm towards the end.
