A new influx of Youth Candidates arrives at Borussia Dortmund’s Academy over the weekend, and they played their first match today – an exhibition against the current U19 squad. David Wagner (U23 Manager) and Edin Terzic (U19 Coach) took control of the sides, with First Team Manager Grayson Surman watching from the stands at Stadion Rote Erde.
After an even first-half, played at a comfortable pace – notably with the U19s resting a few key players ahead of Wednesday’s league match against Bochum – the second-half came alive with the introduction of several substitutes on either side.
The only goal of the game eventually came when Candidates captain Jens Braun – who put in a man-of-the-match performance – played a neat through-ball to Martin Sauer on 76 minutes to slot past the ‘keeper.
Following the match, all sixteen of the Youth Candidates were offered contracts through to the end of the 2016/2017 season. Centre-backs Jens Braun and Masallah Aydemir were highlighted as having high potential to progress through the club’s teams.
