[DD] Bender’s Groin to miss Semi; U19s Win

SUNDAY 16 MARCH 2014: Sven Bender will miss the DFB-Pokal Semi-Final against Bayern Munich after being substituted after half an hour in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Freiburg. Head Physio Peter Kuhnt assessed his groin injury upon return to Signal Iduna Park and concluded that the strain will keep him sidelined for over a fortnight.

Bender will miss next weekend’s league visit of Nürnberg, as well as the Semi-Final (which has been moved to Wednesday 26 March) against Bayern, and likely the trip to Schalke as well as the First Leg of the UEFA Champions League, depending on scheduling.

Two goals from Josef Odenthal saw Dortmund’s U19 side come from behind to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 at Stadion Rote Erde this morning. Fazli Atalay gave the visitors a 28th minute lead before Odenthal equalised within 90 seconds. He grabbed what proved to be the winner less than three minutes later when he drilled home from the edge of the box.

The win sees Dortmund draw level on 20 matches played with leaders Schalke, with an 8-point gap left to catch-up over the next six matches.
