Dortmund continue to deny Juventus revenge for the 1997 Champions League final with their third win over The Old Lady in four matches since August. In a match where the Italians had several of chances to seal the victory, BVB defended resolutely, and can thank the woodwork on three occasions for keeping them alive in the tie.
After a solid first-half display, resilience was finally broken when Kwadwo Asamoah pounced from close-range to turn home a Giaccherini cross with two minutes left before the break.
The game-plan didn’t change – strong defending and quick breaks – and Dortmund benefitted from a fortuitous equaliser when Leonardo Bonucci and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon got themselves in a tangle, with the Juventus centre-back nodding the ball into his own net.
Dortmund chances were few and far between for the remaining half-hour, and as time passed, Juvé twice broke through the back four but woeful finishing kept BVB in the tie. The reverse leg is in eight days time, and Dortmund will take tonight’s valuable away goal as a cherished prize.

Match report by @realtimeFM:
“Juventus are scoring goals for fun at home, and I think they may have too much for Dortmund tonight. The Germans will be looking to escape with a result to set themselves up for the home leg.” – Tom Walters, World Soccer.
The Italian Serie A 2nd-placed side get us underway against the German Bundesliga leaders. This is their fourth meeting in eight months, Dortmund won twice at home, and we had a 0-0 draw here in Turin back in November.
The winners of this tie over the two legs will face the winners of tonight’s other quarter-final tie between AC Milan and Manchester City.
Dortmund are unchanged from the side that beat Bayern Munich last week to put them in the final of the German Cup.
Dortmund have a corner. julian Schieber swings the ball out wide for Marco Reus, but a home defender gets a touch to nod it behind. Bonucci and Chiellini combine to get it away.
Fantastic challenge by Asamoah on Praet in the centre-circle as Dortmund looked to break quickly. Timed to perfection and sets up a counter of their own, which eventually came to nothing.
Neven Subotic commits to a challenge on Quagliarella right in front of the Additional Assistant Referee, and the Juve striker appeals in vain. Corner.
Giovinco wins a free-kick 20 yards out after Götze trips him. He takes the free-kick himself which deflects of the wall and wide.
The ball is pulled back for Cristian Ledesma on the edge of the penalty arc and his volley skims the top of the bar.
Ledesma has another go from 20+ yards out, aways bending wide though. Home side looking to test Weidenfeller from range tonight.
Marco Reus’s cross into the six-yard box is knocked away by a centre-back, and Dennis Praet smacks a shot on the volley from 18 yards but it bends wide.
Glorious chance for Juventus to take the lead! Quagliarella hits another 25-yarder which beats Weidenfeller but crashes back down off the bar, no goal, but the rebound falls straight to Asamoah who hits it first time towards the empty net but misses by a yard.
Marco Reus brings the ball inside the box, but has a shot blocked.
Ledesma bends a free-kick from 25 yards just wide.
Gianluigi Buffon is at full-stretch low down to deny Julian Schieber with a shot that skips off the wet grass. Juventus fail to clear the danger and Robert Lewandowski blasts a shot narrowly over the top from the edge of the box.
There’s been a red card at the San Siro. Manchester City are down to 10-men after Joleon Lescott has been dismissed for bringing down Fernando Llorente just outside the box.
Goal in the other tie: AC Milan 1-0 Manchester City. City immediately punished as Jean Il Makoun crashes home a free-kick.
1-0 JUVENTUS! Juventus involve all of the front four as they work the ball out wide for Giaccherini. He turns Schmelzer and drills a low cross in towards the six-yard box where Kwadwo Asamoah pivots and pokes it past Weidenfeller for the opener.
Great timing for the hosts, Dortmund were certainly hoping to make the break without conceding. Knowing this side, they’ll go for an away goal now.
Lewandowski has a sight of goal and tries to curl a low shot round Buffon, which the ‘keeper is equal too and he pushes it wide. Juventus clear the corner away, long-ball up front towards Ledesma who tries to chip Weidenfeller and hits the bar.
HALF-TIME: Juventus 1-0 Borussia Dortmund (Champions League QF1)
Let’s go, eskimo! Dortmund kick us off for the second forty-five. No changes.
Chiellini is bamboozled by a bouncing ball, and his poor touch is shepherded out by Schieber for a Dortmund corner. Dortmund believing more in set-pieces than free-play it seems.
Subotic heads a cross behind for a Juventus corner. Weidenfeller comes to catch at the near post. He launches the ball upfield for Schieber, but it rolls away off the slippery surface.
Asamoah loses his marker and gets on the end of a Ledesma square-ball but drills his shot wide. That really should have been two-nil.
Ping-pong in the Dortmund penalty area but Mats Hummels throws himself at everything, and the visiting captain helps the ball clear.
EQUALISER FOR DORTMUND! Leonardo Bonucci holds his head in his hands after nodding the ball past his own ‘keeper from ten yards out. On the counter, Dortmund broke and Marco Reus whipped a cross in towards Julian Schieber. Gianluigi Buffon came to claim his week header as Bonucci went to nod it back to his ‘keeper, instead lobbing it over the top of him.
Massive away goal for Dortmund. Juventus make a change¹: Alessandro Matri replaces Quagliarella (6.3).
Does that change the Dortmund gameplan? They’ll always believe they can win every game but they’re having to shut up shop here. Do they take a 1-1, or push for a second away goal?
Dortmund win a corner. Dennis Praet with a sublime turn to lose his marker before his cross is smashed behind by Bonucci.
Bedlam inside the Juventus six-yard box. The corner wasn’t cleared, and Praet whipped it back in hard and low. There’s a melee and Lewandowski has slammed the ball into the back of the net.
Goal disallowed, that much was clear, but also a yellow card for Lewandowski. Presumably for dissent.
Carlos Tevez has an equaliser for 10-man Manchester city at AC Milan, 1-1.
Mats Hummels is booked after he clatters Astori on halfway.
AC Milan are back in front at the San Siro. Fernando Llorente puts them 2-1 up.
Second change for Juventus²: Mauricio Isla replaces Giovinco (6.9).
Dortmund haven’t made a change yet, but they’re controlling the ball well. Working it across the field trying to find an opening.
Mirko Vucinic latches on to Asamoah’s through-ball, turns Mats Hummels and cracks a shot off the base of Weidenfeller’s left-hand post. Juventus have had plenty of chances to win this tonight.
Vucinic is again behind the back four, this time the shot towards goal is only denied by Weidenfeller’s fingertips. Dortmund immediately lump the ball upfield and win a corner.
Buffon palms away Hummels’s header from Praet’s corner. End to end stuff here.
[90+2] Asamoah beats the offside trap but can only poke it wide from twelve yards out.
