Champions Lge QF2: Dortmund 3-2 Juventus

A dramatic night at Signal Iduna Park was won from twelve yards out by Ivan Perisic with almost the last kick of the game. Level at one-all from last week’s First Leg in Turin, it was vital that Dortmund kept a clean-sheet, and to that end, they made two changes: Roman Weidenfeller back in goal, and Kevin Großkreutz providing some stability on the left.

All the best-laid plans went to pot when Claudio Marchisio converted at the near post following good work by Vucinic to get the cross in. The goal cancelled out Dortmund’s fortunate away goal at the Juventus Stadium, and meant that they’d need to score twice after the break in order to avoid extra-time.

Julian Schieber turned the game round with a pair of poacher’s finishes, both from Mario Götze deliveries. The first came when Götze picked-up a long ball from Buffon, lobbing the ball back into the box for Schieber to half-volley past the stranded ‘keeper. he then poked Dortmund in front when Götze’s free-kick went all the way through towards Buffon, but Schieber’s outstretched boot toe’d the ball home in the 78th minute.

All Dortmund’s hard work looked like it was for nought five minutes later when Sebastian Giovinco seemingly miss-hit a volley from a Pepe cross that wrong-footed Weidenfeller to level the tie at 3-3 on aggregate, but put Juventus ahead on away goals.

Two and a half minutes into the indicated three of stoppage time, and Andreas Beck lobbed a deep cross towards Ivan Perisic at the far post who was bundled over by Mauricio Isla. Penalty and a yellow card. Up stepped Perisic to smash the penalty past Buffon and send Dortmund into the final four.

BVB have been awarded £4m in prize money, and will play AC Milan on 23rd (home) and 29th (away) in the Semi-Finals. The other tie is between Barcelona and Manchester United who met in the 2011 final.

Match report by @realtimeFM:

[00] It’s poised at one-apiece from the first leg, so Dortmund know a clean sheet will see them through. Only kept one in their last twelve matches though, so we’re in for a cracker! The home side get us underway!

[03] Some committed challenges from both sides in these opening exchanges. Kevin Großkreutz, in his first appearance in seven matches, is everywhere. First shot comes from Arturo Vidal but Weidenfeller is equal to it.

[04] Dortmund have the first corner when Großkreutz has a cross turned behind. It comes to nothing.

[10] Götze sends a free-kick towards the far post, but Neven Subotic heads it wide.

[15] 1-0 JUVENTUS (1-2 AGG)! Mirko Vucinic intercepts a poor throw from Marcel Schmelzer and starts a counter-attack down Juve’s right-hand side. He plays a neat one-two with Quagliarella before finding Claudio Marchisio at the near post who slots it home.

[23] Reus has an opportunity to lumop the ball into the box from a free-kick out wide. He sends it into the six-yard box, and Vidal heads it over his own bar. From the corner, Lewandowski powers a header towards goal that skims the crossbar.

[28] Kwadwo Asamoah and Fabio Quagliarella exchange passes as they stride towards the Dortmund back four, but Asamoah drags a shot wide after creating some space.

[90+3] All the eyes in the stadium are on Ivan Perisic. Score from the spot to go through, miss and Dortmund are out, it’s that simple. He’s missed the only penalty he’s taken this season…
