Vitesse Arnhem have won their first silverware since 1989 with a 3-0 win over Utrecht in today’s KNVB Beker – the Dutch national cup. Wilfried Bony scored his 25th goal of the season to put Vitesse in front with thirteen minutes on the clock, before they went into the break two-up thanks to a fantastic stoppage time free-kick from Ronny.
Utrecht picked themselves up after the interval and piled on the pressure to get back into it, but when they over-committed at a corner with twenty minutes to go, Vitesse broke with pace. Ronny looked to have overrun the ball but a terrible touch back to his ‘keeper from Mike van der Hoorn allowed Ronny to chase down and slot home a third goal.
That’s how it finished, and Vitesse collected the trophy in the middle of a downpour at the De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam. With just one match left in the league, Vitesse are a point behind Ajax in the race for second-place. Ajax host Utrecht, while Vitesse travel to bottom-side Go Ahead Eagles next Sunday.
