Daily Diary: Friday 2nd May – Rubin Win Title

FRIDAY 02 MAY 2014: Rubin Kazan have won the Russian Prem’er Liga after their 4-1 win over holders Spartak Moscow tonight. With two matches to play, they’ve opened up a seven point gap over nearest rivals Zenit St. Petersburg. Rubin are unbeaten in nine in the league, and have won their third title after success in 2008 and 2009.

Borussia Mönchengladbach beat BVB’s cup final opponents Fortuna Düsseldorf 2-1 in the Bundesliga tonight to climb back into the Europa League spot. Luuk de Jong scored his six of the season to put them in front after quarter of an hour, the only goal in a one-way first-half.

Düsseldorf thought they’d snatched a point when Atdhe Nuhiu scored with six minutes to play, one of the visitors’ two shots on target all game, despite a very tight onside call which infuriated the home bench. However, the hosts caught Düsseldorf napping at the back inside two minutes and Havard Nordtveit scored the winner.
