Bundesliga Final Day: Results, Review, Table

bundesliga-RESULTS-540

The Bundesliga season came to a close tonight, with all eighteen teams in action and 22 goals scored across the country. With most of the key issues decided ahead of today, biggest winners on the day were Bayer Leverkusen who leapfrogged Schalke to claim the final UEFA Champions League spot for next season.

They were 3-0 up at Werder Bremen inside half an hour before a second-half fightback from the home side pulled themselves back level with twenty minutes to play. Jeffrey Obst won the game with four minutes to go, through unfortunately for him, at the wrong end. He got the final touch to divert a cross past his own ‘keeper to give Leverkusen the points with a 4-3 win.

Jefferson Farfán missed a seventh-minute penalty for Schalke in a 0-0 draw against Freiburg, in a match where a win would have sealed fourth place. With Leverkusen’s win, they miss out on a goal difference of just six.

Fürth got their third win in a row to keep the belief of staying-up alive. They won 2-1 at Wolfsburg (who missed out on a Europa League spot with Mönchengladbach beating Hannover) to stay out of the bottom two and give themselves one last chance at survival in the Bundesliga 1-2 Playoff.

Hoffenheim (64 pts), Hertha Berlin (63) and Augsburg (63) are the three teams at the top of 2-Bundesliga ahead of the final matches on Sunday. Two of those sides will replace Köln and Bochum who slipped into the second-flight. The third will play Fürth over two legs for top-flight status.

Mario Mandzukic scored a fine second-half strike for Bayern Munich in their 3-1 win over cup finalists Düsseldorf to ensure he finished the season as the league’s top scorer. He found the back of the net 29 times in 31 appearances, two ahead of Dortmund’s Julian Schieber who hit 27 goals in 29 matches.

Regardless of Saturday’s DFB-Pokal Final result, Fortuna Düsseldorf will play Europa League football next season, as Borussia Dortmund have qualified for the Champions League.
