The hosts were shocked by defeat to Croatia in Recife this evening, playing the entirety of the second-half with ten men after Neymar was sent-off following two incidents of diving.
His first yellow card came inside the opening five minutes when the Italian referee twice waved-away penalty protests, initially for an Ivan Perisic challenge on Vagner Love, with Neymar tangling with Blazevic seconds later that earned the Brazilian a caution.
European Golden Shoe winner Mario Mandzukic put Croatia in front inside ten minutes, turning home a low cross from Badelj as Brazil failed to deal with a quick throw-in.
Ganso drilled a low shot home from fifteen yards to level the scores after being set-up by Neymar’s mazy run with the ball into the box, and Vágner Love put the hosts in front five minutes later when he volleyed home Neymar’s looping cross from the left.
In first-half stoppage time came the moment Neymar will want to forget. A Brazilian corner was cleared and as the ball was played back into the area, he went down under pressure from Mandzukic and was promptly shown a second yellow.
Mandzukic further incurred the wrath of the home crowd shortly after the hour mark when he scored his 9th goal in his last 10 games for Croatia. David Luiz’s back-pass towards Victor in goal was woefully under-hit, allowing Mandzukic to steal and easily round the ‘keeper to draw level.
Ten minutes later and Ivica Olic put Croatia back in front from the penalty spot after Marcelo had bundled over Srna in the box, and he doubled his personal tally to put the game beyond Brazil six minutes later. The hosts’ back four had pushed up too high and Olic was able to burst through from the centre-circle before deftly clipping home from the edge of the box.
Neymar will be suspended for Brazil’s clash against Slovakia on Friday.
