Tottenham’s Gaston Ramírez scored a fantastic opening goal in the first Group B match, sending Uruguay on their way to all three points. His strike after eight minutes saw him cut inside, beat four men on a 30-yard dribble before lashing home from the edge of the box.
Abel Hernández doubled the lead moments before the break in this battle between two sides both rated as “dark horses” for success in Brazil this summer. Álvaro Fernandez chipped a ball over the Belgian back four that Hernández controlled well, rounded Cortois and slotted home.
Marouane Fellaini headed home from a Vertonghen corner ten minutes after the break while Belgium only had ten men on the park with Vanden Borre receiving treatment, but Ramirez scored his second with a delightful free-kick from 22 yards out that found the top corner perfectly.
Vertonghen set-up Belgium’s second goal with a little over ten minutes to play when his cross towards the near post was poked home by Romelu Lukaku, but they couldn’t find an equaliser.
