Canada’s return to the FIFA World Cup Finals ended with their fourth defeat out of four, once again failing to score, as they were brushed aside by a competent Norwegian side who ran out 2-0 winners at the Maracanã.
With half-time looming, Norway caught Canada completely on the break when they cleared a free-kick away and broke with pace in numbers. Canadian defender David Edgar got a touch to Ruben Jenssen’s cross, but the ball squirmed to the far post where Alexander Søderlund had a simple tap-in.
Jenssen provided the delivery from a free-kick for Norway’s second goal twelve minutes after the break. Nick Ledgerwood, already cautioned, brought down Morten Gamst Pedersen 25 yards out and was lucky not to receive his marching orders.
The set-piece was played in towards the penalty spot where Espen Ruud got on the end of it and sent his half-volley past Lars Hirschfield.
Norway will play the Netherlands on Saturday, with the winners qualifying for the Second Round. Guinea play Canada on the same day.
Nick Ledgerwood’s day wasn’t going to get any better and he received a second yellow card eight minutes later after he went through the back of Christian Grindheim, becoming the second player to be dismissed at the tournament.
