All eyes were on Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to finally make their mark at a FIFA World Cup after a stunning season for the pair, and it was the former who will be celebrating tonight after a fine brace to seal a 2-1 win for Argentina.
Andreas Granqvist put Sweden in front after just five minutes when he beat the diminutive Messi to Oscar Wendt’s free-kick to head past Caballero from six yards out.
A little over ten minutes later and Argentina were back on level terms. A flowing move down the right ended with Higuaín laying off Peruzzi’s low cross perfectly for Lionel Messi who smashed home a fierce drive from ten yards out.
Three minutes after the break, and Gonzalo Higuaín had a great opportunity to put Argentina in front as Sweden failed to deal with a high cross into the box. Kim Källström’s sliced clearance fell nicely for Higuaín whose effort from twelve yards out beat Andreas Isaksson but came back off the far post.
The winner came with twenty minutes to go as Lionel Messi picked up a square ball from Jose Sosa thirty yards out, burst past three defenders and into the box before slotting past Isaksson for his 25th international goal.
Sweden will face a rap from FIFA after having five players cautioned during the game. With a tough-tackling Mexico next, they could face selection issues for their final Group G match against Australia.
