Dortmund played two very different, experimental XIs in a friendly win at Vancouver Whitecaps who played a reserves side, with the club being half-way through their MLS season.
BVB’s starting line-up had an average outfield age of just 20 years old, including 15 year-old Kai Kaul and 16 year-old Osman Varol in the back four. 19 year-old Scott Tanser captained the side on his first senior start. Only Kevin Großkreutz and Dennis Praet retained their spots from the starting XI three days ago.
After giving away a silly free-kick in the opening couple of minutes, BVB were punished when Jamaal Knox swept in an opening goal for the Whitecaps. It took time for the young Dortmund side to gel, but it came together on the half-hour when Marvin Ducksch cracked into the top corner from 18 yards out.
The home side looked shaky dealing with the number of crosses and gifted Dortmund a goal five minutes before the break. King slipped giving Jeremy Dudziak the simple job of slotting home from ten yards out.
A full change during the interval came for Dortmund who gave game time to some senior players, though it was young Benjamin Bella and Karl-Heinz Horn that stood out, looking comfortable alongside players like Leitner, Lewandowski, Taiwo and Fischer.
BVB knocked on the door a few times, but it was a fumble by the home ‘keeper in injury time that gave Robert Lewandowski an easy finish for 3-1 after the Polish striker had smashed a shot against the crossbar from outside the area.
There was no place in the squad for Kostas Katsouranis whose contract expires tomorrow. Cimo-Patric Röcker and Heinz Lindner will arrive at the club on Tuesday when the transfer window opens, as will ten players who return from being on loan elsewhere.
The squad wore #1-24. Squad numbers have not been assigned for the 2014-15 season.

Match report by @realtimeFM:
Whitecaps U23 side kick-off! Average age of the home side is 24, against a Dortmund side whose outfield players average under 21 throughout the squad.
Early caution for Marc Hornschuh as the Dortmund centre back comes through the back of David Smith.
Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 Borussia Dortmund: Hornschuh gave the free-kick away in a dangerous position and has been punished for it. The experienced Janeil King whips it in low towards the six-yard box, and Tony Graham flicks it to the back post where Jamaal Knox has a tap-in past Langerak.
Osman Varol trips Frazao as he goes past him up the left. Mirror image of the free-kick that led to the goal. Meißner heads the cross away and Dortmund clear.
Dortmund win the first corner when Fante heads behind Ducksch’s ball forwards towards Ginczek. Praet’s delivery gets deflected over the top by Giorgi from Meißner’s header.
Visitors starting to come into it more now, finding accuracy passing down the flanks. Dudziak has a cross put behind and they win their third corner.
Daniel Ginczek lashes a half-volley towards the top corner from twelve yards out after Kaul nods down Praet’s corner but it’s blocked on the line. Dortmund work the ball back into the box but Ducksch is offside.
Dudziak picks out Ginczek with a great ball forwards into the box, but Ginczek’s shot is deflected wide by Fante. Meißner gets a header at goal from six yards but Sowell tips it over the top. Great chance for an equaliser.
Daniel Ginczek gets the ball a yard or two inside the box as BVB play a shott corner, he takes a touch and beats Sowell from 15 yards but Whitecaps captain José Luna is on the line to clear it away.
Joe Randall is penalised for a foul on Dennis Praet 20 yards out, to the right of goal. Oh dear, Praet plays it short to Kaul who loses possession and Knox can break for the hosts over halfway but Kaul and Praet win it back between them.
Tony Graham fires a shot at goal from 25 yards out which dips but just grazes the bar on the way over.
Dennis Praet shows a touch of class to sell his marker a dummy then plays a nice through-ball to Daniel Ginczek who again has his shot turned round the post. Corner. Luna gets the cross away and clears his lines a moment later. Ducksch has a shot deflected wide.
Frazao is clean through against Langerak but Scott Tanser gets back and gets across and wins the ball perfectly cleanly in the area. Dortmund nearly caught out as they committed too many men forwards at the corner.
Vancouver Whitecaps 1-1 Borussia Dortmund: It’s been coming, and BVB have levelled through a fine strike from Marvin Ducksch. Hornschuh heads a clearing header back into the box where Ducksch controls well and fires into the top corner from 18 yards.
Jeremy Dudziak is a yard wide with a shot from 15 yards after Dennis Praet plays the ball across the box. He’s pulling the strings in the midfield for Dortmund here.
Period of strong Dortmund pressure comes to an end when Ducksch is penalised for an aerial challenge on a Whitecaps centre-back.
Vancouver Whitecaps 1-2 Borussia Dortmund: The visitors bring the ball up the right and Scott Tanser lofts a cross into the box. It looks too long for Marvin Ducksch but Janeil King makes a hash of a simple header. The ball drops to Jeremy Dudziak who slots it past Sowell.
An utterly bizarre moment gifts Dortmund a corner when it could have easily been a third goal. Langerak launches a free-kick forwards, Fante lets it drop behind him, Ducksch drives the loose ball towards goal which Luna clears, smashing Fante on the back of the head and looping inches wide of a stranded Sowell.
HALF-TIME: Vancouver Whitecaps U23 1-2 Borussia Dortmund
[HT] Full change of personnel for Dortmund, only Viktor Fischer left on the bench from their 12 subs. Whitecaps have made all five of their available outfield changes at the break too. Here’s how they both line-up now:
Dortmund win a corner inside 45 seconds of the restart when McIntosh introduces himself to 15 year-old Mario Schröer a little too roughly for the Referee’s liking. Leitner’s free-kick is headed behind by Luna.
Lasse Sobiech gets to Leitner’s corner at the near post but puts it over the top. Goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller has taken the Dortmund captain’s armband, by the way.
Robert Lewandowski gets his first touch other than the kick-off, and lays a nice ball off for his strike partner Benjamin Bella, but the youngster is closed down quickly and can’t get a shot away.
Tony Graham nearly capitalises on a long ball over the top of the Dortmund back four but Lasse Sobiech outmuscles him and Roman Weidenfeller comes to gather the ball safely.
Whitecaps have won their first corner of the game from a long-ball down the left. Julian Koch has to put it behind as Jamaal Knox looks to get a cross in. Dortmund clear their lines from the set piece.
Another corner for Dortmund, their tenth now, as Lewandowski’s cross is put behind by Luna.
Frazao does well to get past Schröer and Koch before getting the ball into the area, but Alex Lacey cuts out the cross. Home side pushing for an equaliser at the moment.
Somehow Dortmund aren’t further ahead. Abbas Hammoud puts a cross into the box for Lewandowski that Jermone Silveira attempts to head behind, only succeeding in looping the ball over his ‘keeper. Lewandowski and McIntosh chase it and the defender throws himself at it a yard out to nod it wide.
Looks like Viktor Fischer is getting a run-out after all. He replaces Moritz Leitner who appears to have tweaked something, nothing serious but he’s brought off as a precaution.
Inside the final quarter of an hour now and the match is petering out slightly. ‘Caps going for long-balls that often end up wayward, Ben Sari more than guilty. BVB happy knocking the ball round but crosses are being cleared away more often than not. José Luna solid at the heart of their defence.
Lovely ball forwards into the box from Alex Lacey is brought down by Julian Koch but his volley is charged down. That would have been some goal!
Benjamin Bella gets into some great positions but just can’t find a finish from what we’ve seen these last two games. He can’t turn a Fischer cross on target.
Whitecaps use their sixth and last sub to bring on young George Murphy, replacing Brian Sowell in goal. Looks like if Dortmund have a sight of goal they might just test him in these final five minutes.
Murphy gets to a Fischer cross just ahead of Bella. Great ball in. BVB ending with a flourish. Well have two additional minutes.
[90+1] Robert Lewandowski slots the ball into the top corner from 18 yards out but the flag is up, correctly, as Bella flicks on a ball forwards from Lacey. No debate about it, and everyone jogs back up the other end for the free-kick.
[90+2] Woodwork! Murphy’s free-kick for the offside is gathered by Taiwo who plays it to Hammoud up the left. He finds Fischer who puts Lewandowski through, he smashes it against the bar from 22 yards.
[91+2] Vancouver Whitecaps 1-3 Borussia Dortmund: Disaster for George Murphy as he fumbles the ball after it comes back off the crossbar, and Robert Lewandowski gets there first clipping it over him and over the line.
