[DD] Stevens Swaps Schalke for Oranje

DAILY DIARY, 20 July 2014: Schalke manager Huub Stevens has stepped-down at Veltins-Arena after three years in charge during his second spell at the club. Stevens took Schalke to UEFA Cup glory in 1997, as well as the DFB-Pokal in 2001 and 2002, but couldn’t match that success, with just a Bundesliga runners-up spot in 2013.

Stevens has been appointed as the new national manager of the Netherlands, following Jan Jansen’s retirement after the World Cup.

England, Ghana, Norway, Paraguay, and Peru remain the vacant senior international managerial vacancies after Diego Simeone (Argentina), Roberto Di Matteo (Switzerland), and Unai Emery (Russia) were appointed over the weekend.

Leo Bittencourt’s proposed loan move from BVB to Lyon has collapsed as the French side cannot honour the initial monthly payment for his services. The 20 year-old midfielder will remain at Signal Iduna Park for the time being, and has joined the side on tour in England.

Chelsea have agreed a £12.25m deal with Liverpool for the services of Welsh international midfielder Joe Allen, who moved to Anfield from Swansea for £15m two years ago, before averaging 22 appearances a season for Liverpool.

In other big-spending news, Napoli have signed Metalist’s Andile Jali for £15.25m.
