Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-0 Dortmund (Supercup)

dfl-supercup540_2014

Fortuna Düsseldorf lifted their first trophy in 25 years with a 1-0 win in front of their home crowd in the DFL-Supercup against domestic-double winners Borussia Dortmund this evening, taking slight revenge for their DFB-PokalFinal defeat in Berlin ten weeks ago.

nando-rafael70The only goal of the game came courtesy of half-time sub Nando Rafael (left) who took advantage of a loose ball to get inside the box and beat Weidenfeller with a shot that came back off the post, but was easily turned-in from close range in the 66th minute.

Dortmund arguably had the better of the opening half, but couldn’t make a breakthrough, and ten minutes after the break, with Schürrle replacing Fischer, hit the crossbar through Santana.

Following the goal, Perisic and Schürrle both struck the frame of the goal with shots that had Düsseldorf ‘keeper Giefer beaten on both occasions, but the efforts were both denied by the woodwork. BVB huffed and puffed, but couldn’t find an equaliser.

50′ BVB counter from the corner but Schürrle takes a heavy touch inside the box and now Düsseldorf can break forwards…

62′ Dortmund have a corner now, their fourth of the game. Reus had his square-ball knocked behind by Van den Bergh.

86′ Schürrle’s shot charged down but Perisic keeps it in on the left, he curls it into the six-yard box but Tonel gets it away ahead of Schieber.

86′ Risse taks away the legs of Schmelzer. This free-kick needs a good delivery into the box.

87′ Malezas heads the set-piece away, but BVB win possession back and go again.

87′ Final change for Düsseldorf as they eat up the time. Philp (7.1) is replaced by Patrick Funk.

88′ Düsseldorf just thumping the ball forwards when they win it back.

“You can expect to see André in the starting line-up in the near future.”

“It was frustrating to hit the woodwork three times, but there were other opportunities. We can’t just say we were unlucky.”
