Monthly Dortmund Boardroom Update

The monthly board review has taken place at Signal Iduna Park, and to summarise, the Borussia Dortmund board are pleased with Gray Surman’s management of the team. The club’s increased stature since he took the helm in May 2013 has been a contributing factor.

However, the board continue to be disappointed with the departure of Jakub Blaszczykowski, with the opinion that he should have commanded a higher fee than the £6m that Marseille paid for him. Fans were initially irked by the capture of Lars Bender and André Schürrle from a rival club, though both have performed well in pre-season.

Chairman Richard Rauball reported that despite several weeks of searching, no foreign feeder club links could be established. Despite recording a loss of £32.4m last month, largely from the Bender and Schürrle transfers, the club remain in a very healthy position.

Monthly Turnover: £22.25m
Previous Month: £50.43m
Main Income: £15.08m (Season Tickets)

Monthly Expenditure: £54.65m
Previous Month: £37.28m
Main Expenditure: £32.73m (Transfer Expenditure)

Assistant Manager Zeljko Buvac has provided some feedback on how the players have been training over the past month: Among the senior players, Roman Weidenfeller and (the injured) Marcel Deelen have not impressed the fitness coaches, but Julian Koch has shown encouraging signs of improvement.

There’s better news on the youth front, with Hendrick Brauer (tactics), Josef Odenthal (ball control), and Daniel Schmadtke (shot-stopping) have been impressing David Wagner and Volker Kersting in recent weeks.

BVB were drawn away to fifth-tier SC Freucht in the opening round of the DFB-Pokal, which kicks the season off on 16 August. Dortmund have three friendlies between now and then, with a round of international fixtures also taking place.
