Europa League News: Third Qualifying Round

29 clubs are safely through to the Europa League Playoffs after victory in tonight’s second-leg ties in the Third Qualifying Round. Germany’s representatives have both progressed, with Fortuna Düsseldorf through on the away-goals rule after a 0-0 draw at home, and VfL Bochum have seen off Lausanne despite losing in Switzerland tonight.

Second-seeds in the competition, Inter Milan, won 3-2 at FC Midtjylland to progress 4-2 on aggregate, with Denis Alibec’s late goal killing off their Danish opponents’ hope due to the away-goals rule.

AEK Athens had Zois Potouridis sent-off in extra-time but went through courtesy of a Miguel Cordero goal which levelled the tie at 2-2 between AEK and their Turkish hosts Kasimpasa, and put them through.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa, Spartak Moscow, Basel, Rosenborg, Club Brugge and Mallorca are all safely through.

Tonight’s 29 winning sides are joined by 15 clubs who lost in yesterday’s Champions League Third Phase, plus 20 seeded clubs who will enter at the Playoff stage, for a total of 64 clubs. The winners will form 32 of the Group Stage’s 48 clubs. UEFA will make the draw tomorrow.
