The club has appointed the first handful of a number of new coaching positions. José Segura has joined the senior squad from Real Betis, while the U19 backroom has been joined by Antonio Spataro, Francesco Salucci and former Schalke player Norbert Elgert.

The opening Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen has been brought forward to 22 August for live broadcast. The rearranged fixture means that the champions will play first and, curiously, will have their first three matches of the season all take place on a Friday.

Thomas Meißner put in a fantastic display for TSV Aachen yesterday in their 4-2 win over Osnabrück. The young centre-back won all of his aerial challenges and was threatening at set pieces. With the game at 3-2 going into the last six minutes, he scored the goal that sealed TSV’s first win in 2.Bundesliga this season.
