Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Werder Bremen (B’Liga)

gotzeMario Götze scored one minute after his introduction to get Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga campaign off to a winning start, calmly brushing away Werder Bremen with a convincing 3-0 win at Signal Iduna Park tonight. Götze replaced Perisic at the break, and headed a 47th minute opener.

Joy for his 25th league goal for Dortmund was momentarily short-lived, as Mats Hummels conceded a penalty shortly after the restart, but Roman Weidenfeller pushed away Niclas Füllkrug’s spot-kick to maintain the lead. Marco Reus doubled the lead on the hour, before Götze wrapped it up with fifteen minutes to go at a corner.

Welcome to Signal Iduna Park on a drizzly Friday night for the opening match of the new Bundesliga season, with the champions Borussia Dortmund hosting Werder Bremen. No Lars Bender or Stevan Jovetic for the home side, while the visitors boast both of their new midfielders in their starting XI today.

Andreas Beck is making his 225th career league appearance today, while fellow full-back Cimo Röcker will make his league début for Dortmund against his former club if he comes on.

Tom Wallace from World Soccer Magazine has the prediction today: “It’s a close call but I’ve got to go for Dortmund today. Werder Bremen will give it everything but Dortmund should come out victorious in the end. The visitors will surely miss Bashkim Kadrii today.”

[00] Niclas Füllkrug and Joseph Akpala wait for referee Florian Meyer’s whistle and the Bundesliga season begins!

[02] Robert Lewandowski starts and finishes a fine Dortmund move, when he hustled and won the ball back in the final third, eventually getting it wide for André Schürrle. His cross was met on the half-volley by Lewandowski but it bends away from the post and is a foot wide or so.

[03] Sebastian Mielitz comes to punch away a Schürrle cross, but doesn’t get any distance on it, as it spiins up into the air. Lewandowski touches it back to Sven Bender who resists the shot into a crowded box, playing it right for Dennis Praet, who finds Andreas Beck on the overlap but he rushes his cross and it sails out for a goal-kick.

[03] Foul by Philipp Bargfrede on Sven Bender as they attack the goal-kick in the air.

[04] Marco Reus tracks back and intercepts just as the visitors break through John Chibuike, with Mats Hummels being caught out of position. Praet hustles the Bremen man wide while Reus comes and wins the ball, breaking quickly. Praet joins him and they win a corner at the other end.

[05] The corner is cleared and Gebre Selassie charges forwards, before winning a throw-in by BVB’s corner flag. End-to-end stuff in the opening five minutes!

[07] Marco Reus looked like he’d run into trouble, but he’s been awarded a free-kick about 25 yards out, a little to the right of goal, after a trip by Ragnar Klavan. Shooting territory for Ivan Perisic or Dennis Praet here.

[08] Perisic slams it straight into the wall, but Schürrle keeps it alive on the left but Marcel Schmelzer is penalised for a foul and concedes a free-kick.

[09] Marco Reus is on the overlap and Beck finds him down the right. It’s a great cross into the six-yard box, but Sokratis gets there ahead of Lewandowski. Praet is clattered by Gebre Selassie right on the edge of the penalty arc as it’s cleared though and Dortmund have another set piece.

[09] Perisic has his shot deflect off the wall towards Reus who pulls it back, but Perisic is closed down by Akpala who wins it off him – not for the first-time today – and breaks for the visitors.

[10] Beck with a crunching tackle wins it back from Akpala, but Perisic concedes possession in the middle of the park, playing a sloppy ball forwards. Bargfrede intercepts and plays it forwards, but is held back by Sven Bender. Free-kick on halfway.

[11] Sokratis heads away a Schmelzer cross right in front of his ‘keeper, but Reus and Praet can’t get the loose ball down and back into the box before it’s thumped clear over halfway.

[12] Great stuff from Reus who skins Rudy for pace, before playing a pair of one-twos with Beck, then Praet, to cut inside with the ball. He’s tripped by Chibuike two yards outside the box.

[12] Ivan Perisic hits it straight through the wall and Sebastian Mielitz gets across well to get two hands behind it. Flag goes up against Schürrle at the far post but it had already crept behind for a goal kick.

[13] John Chibuike wins Werder Bremen their first corner as he buys it off the legs of Mats Hummels down the right.

[14] Neven Subotic heads away, finding Schürrle who plays it long to Lewandowski but the Polish striker is penalised for a foul deep in the final third.

[14] Hammered straight down the other end where it’s flicked on towards Akpala. He’s in behind Subotic and Schmelzer as the ball drops for him… but Florian Meyer has given a free-kick against him for bodychecking Schmelzer.

[15] André Schürrle fires just over the top when he cuts inside from the left onto a lovely ball from Schmelzer.

[16] Reus, Beck and Praet are swinging the ball into the box from the right, with Klavan and Sokratis working hard to clear away. Dortmund pressing very hard here, but can’t get a shot on goal. Have to be careful they’re not caught on a break if the visitors can get the ball under control and launch forwards.

[17] Good movement from Perisic to escape his marker but he can’t direct his powerful header on target from 15 yards out and Mielitz breathes a sigh of relief.

[19] Perisic sends a hanging cross in from the right towards Schürrle, but the German has made the run towards the middle of goal rather than hanging back and it sails over the top. Bender and Chibuike come together moments later and the free-kick goes in Dortmund’s favour, much to the consternation of the visiting dugout. 24-25 yards out, left of centre.

[19] Ivan Perisic steps up and curls it round the wall towards the top corner. Mieltiz is rooted to the spot, but it hits the outside of the post and goes behind. Getting closer, Werder Bremen can’t keep giving him opportunities.

[20] Twenty minutes played, BVB have had 74% of the ball. 8 shots to Werder Bremen’s 0, but have only made Mielitz work the once.

adam-matuszczyk70[23] Adam Matuszczyk gets caught in two minds as Reus and Beck overlap past him down their right-hand side. A handful of Reus’s shirt sees him get the first yellow card of the season. He can’t have any complaints there, Dortmund were building momentum down their right flank.

[25] Sebastian Mielitz comes to claim a Beck cross, clutching the ball gratefully to his chest, taking a breather.

[27] Roman Weidenfeller called into action for the first time, as he picks a cross out of the air under no pressure.

[29] Klavan lumps a huge ball towards the Dortmund box that looks to drop right into the six-yard box. Amidst the jostling, Weidenfeller looks calm as he gets highest punching it away, before Bargfrede clatters into Perisic. Visitors just starting to come into the game now.

[30] Schmelzer finds Perisic in the box but his header is wide by a yard or so.

[33] Klavan makes a great sliding challenge on Beck. Dortmund are continuing to hit them down the right-hand side.

bvb2015_70_praet[34] Dennis Praet is cautioned after he catches Chibuike right in front of the assistant. Bit harsh, that, but the referee evens up the yellow card count and reminds everyone who’s in charge. Hopefully Gray Surman won’t live to regret his recent encouragement of the side to battle more.

[36] Good work from Klavan and Rudy work the ball into the box for Chibuike, and Dortmund hearts are in their mouth as the whistle goes as Hummels makes a challenge… but the referee indicates that the forward was offside.

[39] Half-hearted penalty appeals as Praet plays the ball into Reus, who turns Klavan but goes down under his challenge. Nothing from the officials, as Werder look to break. Sokratis had made two clearing headers before, with crosses continuing to be worked in from either side.

[40] Marco Reus is actually still down following the challenge, and is carried off behind the goal for treatment. Looks like he should be okay though.

[42] Dortmund still playing with ten, as Niclas Füllkrug smashes a shot high over the top from 20 yards out. Reus comes back on before the restart.

[44] Entering the last minute of the half, Dortmund keeping it between them at the back and looking happy to see the half out, and regroup. Board goes up, one additional minute for the Reus delay.

bender[45+1] Sven Bender is cautioned after he’s late on Füllkrug. No need to give away a foul in the defensive third like that, and he’s punished with a booking too. Both central midfielders for Dortmund on yellows now. Need to keep their discipline. Surman will remind them of that at the break.

HALF-TIME: Borussia Dortmund 0-0 SV Werder Bremen (Bundesliga).

[HT] All square at the break, but the visitors have had to weather a storm at times. Sokratis having a great game for them at centre-back, and he needs too. Dortmund a little wasteful from set-pieces, but if they can keep knocking on the door then they’ll surely get a result.

[HT] Change at the break for Dortmund: Mario Götze replaces Ivan Perisic (5.6) in the middle of their three attacking midfielders. Perisic gave the ball away a few times in that half.

[46] We’re back under way!

[47] Borussia Dortmund 1-0 SV Werder Bremen: What an impact from Mario Götze, what a substitution! Marcel Schmelzer has all the time in the world to play in Schürrle who clips a cross over the back four towards the far post where Götze arrives unmarked from the edge of the box and nods past Mielitz. He’s been on the pitch 67 seconds.

[49] PENALTY! Mats Hummels has been penalised for a foul on Joseph Akpala. The Werder Bremen striker had a 25-yard run into the area as he brought the ball forward from Bargfrede’s header, and he’s clipped from behind by the Dortmund captain and Florian Meyer points straight to the spot.

[50] SAVED! Niclas Füllkrug steps up confidently but hits it at the perfect height to Roman Weidenfeller’s right. The ‘keeper goes the right way and pushes his spot kick away.

[53] Marco Reus has defenders backing off as he comes inside from the right, space just opening up in front of him. The shot’s not quite on so he passes square to Schmelzer but it’s a poor ball from his full back and momentum is lost.

[53] Praet keeps it alive, and it’s Schürrle who smashes a shot towards the top corner from 22 yards out. It clips the crossbar on the way over. Foot lower and that would have torn the net clean off.

[56] Bargfrede concedes a corner as a cross comes in from Götze towards Lewandowski. Füllkrug heads Praet’s delivery away.

[57] First change for Werder Bremen: Marko Arnautovic comes on for Joseph Akpala (6.7). Looks like he’s going up front with Chibuike.

[58] For the first time today, Robert Lewandowski has the ball at his feet in the box, but he can’t get a shot away before Sokratis wins the ball with a good challenge. Dortmund look far more dangerous playing the ball into feet like that.

[60] André Schürrle breaks-up a Werder Bremen attack with a great block on Gebre Selassie before bursting away down the left. He finds Schmelzer who whips a cross in for Lewandowski, but it just evades him and the visitors escape.

[63] Borussia Dortmund 2-0 SV Werder Bremen: It’s certainly been coming and there’s a second goal for the champions! Andreas Beck does all the hard work down the right, crossing towards the far post where Lewandowski nods it back across the face of goal for Marco Reus to lash home from close range. Mielitz got a hand to it, but there was no way he was stopping that. Both Dortmund full-backs have an assist today, great work from them.

[63] Second change for Dortmund: Julian Schieber in a straight-swap for Robert Lewandowski (6.9) up-top.

[64] Neven Subotic is receiving treatment after landing awkwardly from an uncontested header. Felipe Santana warming-up.

[65] Gebre Selassie sportingly throws the ball behind for a Dortmund goal-kick.

[67] Subotic is back on but nearly gifts Chibuike with a goal. The centre-back keeps the ball from dropping out for a corner, playing it square for Widenfeller to clear, but it’s short. Chibuike gets a touch six yards out, but the ‘keeper somehow smothers it.

[67] Second change for Werder Bremen: Florian Hartherz is in for Ragnar Klavan (6.8) at left-back

[70] Into the last twenty here, the hosts still dominating but Werder Bremen have the pace and ability to cause problems on a counter attack. Trouble is, Dortmund aren’t giving possession away, being first to mop up any loose balls from clearing headers.

[73] Beck’s cross is flicked on by Schieber, but Reus is charged-down as he goes to pull the trigger. Corner.

[74] Third change for Dortmund takes place ahead of the corner: Viktor Fischer comes on for André Schürrle (6.5) on the left.

[74] Corner from Praet goes short to Fischer. His cross is headed behind by Bargfrede.

[74] Borussia Dortmund 3-0 SV Werder Bremen: From the second corner, Fischer picks the ball up just inside the box after it’s only half-cleared, whipping it back in for Mario Götze to head home from six yards out.

[75] Werder Bremen look shell-shocked. Götze has proved a massive point here today, coming on and scoring twice. Champions 15 minutes away from a very comfortable opening day win.

[77] Audacious effort from Julian Schieber on the half-volley as he belts a Weidenfeller long-ball towards goal from 25 yards out, but it drops over the top, with Mielitz stranded.

[78] Final change of the game, with Werder Bremen bringing off new signing Sebastian Rudy (6.7) and replacing him with Zlatko Junuzovic.

[80] Attendance today is 79,958.

[82] Game just starting to peter out, BVB have the job done, but will want to keep a clean sheet. Werder Bremen not offering much at all. Hosts being allowed freedom to swing crosses in time after time.

[84] Füllkrug gets the ball out of his feet with a nice first touch before driving a low shot at Weidenfeller from the edge of the box, but the ‘keeper has it covered.

[84] Corner for Dortmund, won by Reus on the right. Schieber lays the ball off to him from another Beck cross. The right-back for Dortmund has had a great game today.

[85] Corner comes to nothing, and we’re inside the final five minutes here at Signal Iduna Park.

[87] A pair of full-blooded challenges fly in out of nowhere. Bargfrede clatters through the ball and Fischer after a poor first touch, but Bender then goes in strong on Selassie to win the ball back.

philipp-bargfrede70[88] Philipp Bargfrede takes away the legs of Dennis Praet, and he becomes the fourth player in the book. Yellow card from the referee, hopefully calming things down in these last couple of minutes, just tightening the screw before it bubbles over.

[90] The board goes up for two additional minutes. Visitors pushing forwards looking for some consolation, and Dortmund captain Mats Hummels copmes across to make a great interception as Florian Hartherz comes forwards at pace.

[90] Sven Bender clears off the line as Werder Bremen come within inches of pulling a goal back. Praet looked to have worked wonders to prevent a corner, but Hartherz kept his clearance in, finding Chibuike at the near post. His flick towards goal beat Weidenfeller but Bender was back to cover.

[90+1] The visitors keep the ball alive, working it back into the box from the left. Subotic heads away but it falls to Junuzovic 20 yards out. He blazes a shot over the bar, not getting his knee over the ball. The moment may have passed for them as we have about ninety seconds to play.

[90+2] Viktor Fischer does well to beat two men but he drags his shot wide.

FULL-TIME: Borussia Dortmund 3-0 SV Werder Bremen (Bundesliga). [PKM]

Mario Götze’s introduction at the interval changed this for Dortmund. Scoring a minute from the restart and grabbing the killer third goal moments after the visitors could have pulled it back to 2-1. Reus’s goal was sandwiched between Götze’s pair of headers, as Dortmund bombarded the back four with crosses. Opening day win and a clean sheet for the champions, and a statement to the rest of the league.
