Last season’s top two both got off to a winning start with champions Borussia Dortmund beating Werder Bremen 3-0 at home comfortably, thanks to a Mario Götze brace and a Marco Reus effort, despite conceding a penalty shortly after the opener. Bayern Munich left it late, but a début goal for Olivier Giroud put them in front against Bayer Leverkusen before a late Thomas Müller strike sealed a 3-1 win.
TSG Hoffenheim bounced back to the Bundesliga last season after relegation in 2013 and got their first three points on the board courtesy of a 94th minute winner from Stephan Fürstner. Last time in the top flight it took the club seven matches to record a win, scoring only once in the opening six (and that an 88th minute penalty).
Augsburg, relegated alongside Hoffenheim two seasons ago, also chalked-up an opening day win with a second-half brace from Edu earning them all three points against Nürnberg who survived by a single point last season.
Martin Lanig’s dismissal for Frankfurt arguably cost them the game at home to Wolfsburg, as from the set-piece following the foul that earned him his second yellow card of the game, Fágner swung the ball into the box for Slobodan Medojevic to head home the only goal of the game.
Elsewhere, Freiburg, FSV Mainz, and DFL-Supercup winners Fortuna Düsseldorf all won, while the only draw of the opening weekend was the goalless encounter between promoted Hertha Berlin and Hannover.
