Champions League: Lloris Saves Spurs

Hugo Lloris saved two penalties in the shootout between Roma and Tottenham Hotspur to see the English side progress through to the UEFA Champions League Group Stage for the second season in a row after they threw away a 3-0 lead from last week’s First Leg.

Adebayor’s hat-trick at White Hart Lane eight days ago should have been good enough for Spurs, but they slumped to a Pablo Osvaldo goal on the half-hour mark before giving the Italian side hope when they gave away an 83rd minute penalty that Gianluca Caprari slammed past Lloris to make it 3-2 on aggregate.

Roma threw everything at Tottenham for the remaining seven minutes and with sixty-five seconds of normal time remaining, got the equaliser they needed – and deserved – with Osvaldo powered home a header at the far post to take the tie to extra-time. Thirty minutes came and went without further incident, and a place in the lucrative Group Stage was to be decided from twelve yards out.

Lloris saved from Marco Borriello and Michael Bradley before Cheick Tioté beat Maarten Stekelenburg from the spot to win it 4-2 for Tottenham, meaning Roma will miss-out on the Group Stage for the fourth successive season.

Elsewhere, a second-half strike by Stijn Wuytens was enough to see AS Monaco squeeze past Porto on the away-goals rule after the hosts had taken a two-nil lead on the night, two-one on aggregate, through a James Rodriguez brace inside the opening ten minutes.

Viking and Legia Warsaw played out a 1-1 draw in Stavanger which saw the visitors beat their Norwegian opponents 3-1 on aggregate, and they’ll be joined in tomorrow’s draw by Celtic and Dinamo Zagreb.
