The transfer window has closed for many of the continent’s top-flight domestic leagues, with the largest deal of the day being Chelsea’s capture of Jan Kirchhoff, with the 23 year-old centre-back moving from FSV Mainz in a £15.25m deal.
Mainz immediately reinvested that money in the £5.5m signing of defender Paul Papp from Chievo, and with a £8m deal bringing Patrick Hermann in from Mönchengladbach.
Bayern Munich added a new striker to the club with a £9.5m signing of Javier Hernández, just a year after he joined Real Madrid from Manchester United for £12.5m. Hernández was a fringe player at the Bernabéu last season, scoring 3 times in just 12 appearances.
Rumours were that Borussia Dortmund were looking at centre-back options with Felipe Santana linked with a move away from the club. They allegedly made enquiries into the availability of Per Mertesacker and Phillip Wollscheid but no deals were done.
Dortmund’s only activity today was the sale of Lasse Sobiech to Hannover for £2m, and letting Marcel Deelen move to second-tier Hansa Rostock for the rest of the season.
