Over two-thirds of a million supporters turned out to watch 59 goals being scored in tonight’s 24 UEFA Europa League group games. Robert Acquafresca scored the first of those, with just eighteen seconds on the clock as he put Fiorentina in front at home to Spartak Mocow. The hosts eventually ran-out 2-1 winners.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar hit a hat-trick as Schalke came from behind to beat Red Bull Salzburg 4-1 at the Veltins-Arena, with all four goals coming in a twenty minute spell mid-way through the second-half. Huntelaar takes his tally to a staggering 14 goals for club and country since the summer.
The hosts of the Final, Atletico Madrid, went down to a Djibril Cissé free-kick in Turkey as the Galatasaray striker’s tame effort was defleted twice before wrong-footing Sergio Asenjo. Elsewhere, there were good for CSKA Moscow, Club Brugge, Shakhtar Donestk, Vitesse Arnhem, and Manchester City amongst others.
