Stuttgart beat 10-man Bayern Munich in the weekend’s opening Bundesliga fixture, blowing last year’s runners-up away with three goals before the hour-mark, before Olivier Giroud continued his fine goalscoring form with a pair of late headers to make it 3-2.
Johan Audel had Stuttgart in front inside quarter of an hour when he latched onto Martin Harnik’s through-ball, taking the shot first time from 25 yards out that skipped off the wet turf and beat Manuel Neuer with a bounce. Five minutes before the break, Dante flew into a scissors challenge on Audel right in front of the Assistant Referee by the corner flag, and was shown a straight red card.
Ten minutes after the interval, Arthur Boka beat Luiz Gustavo for pace before squaring for Martin Harnik to tap home at the far post for 2-0, and the hosts made it three four minutes later when William Kvist robbed Javi Martinez before finding Tamás Hajnal who slotted past Neuer from fifteen yards.
Olivier Giroud nodded home crosses from Arjen Robben and then Franck Ribéry to keep the visitors’ hopes alive of rescuing a point, but they were second-best all game, especially after Dante’s reckless challenge. Stuttgart go second, temporarily at least.
Tomorrow, Werder Bremen host Frankfurt with both sides Looking for their first win of the season. The only other team still winless are Hannover who host Mainz. Leaders Augsburg travel to Wolfsburg. On Sunday, game of the day is likely to be at the BayArena where Leverkusen host Dortmund.
Düsseldorf and Freiburg aren’t in action this weekend, with their clash being postponed until 12 November. There’s a full midweek calendar too, with three matches on Tuesday, and the remaining twelve teams play on Wednesday night.
