BVB’s U19 side played a friendly at SC Verl this afternoon, making the short 60-mile trip up the E34 to face the first-team of the fourth-tier club at their 5,000-capacity Stadion an der Poststraße. Dortmund created more chances, but it was the more experienced hosts who made the better of them, twice coming close early-on with BVB having Daniel Schmadtke to thank for keeping them at bay.
A breakthrough did come midway through the first-half when the hosts caught BVB on the break, with Matthias Haeder beating Schmadtke with a fine shot from 22 yards after a long ball forwards from left-back Ihab Darwiche.
U19 manager David Wagner gave run-outs to twenty youngsters over the course of the game, though midfielder Samy Bourard wasn’t included in the squad a the request of first team management, sparking rumours that the recent capture from Anderlecht will feature in the Bundesliga match at Hannover on Saturday.
BVB U19 are back in action on Sunday, hosting Group 3 leaders Leverkusen.
