The Bundesliga Preview: 3rd – 5th October 2014

UPDATE: The weekend got off to a cracking start at the SGL Arena, with Augsburg triumphing in a seven-goal thriller that lifted the home side to fifth, and keeps Frankfurt inside the bottom three.

A debatable Andriy Voronin penalty put the visitors in front before Gregory Schaken equalised for Augsburg at a corner shortly before the break. Torsten Oehrl put the hosts in front before two superb solo goals from Sonny Kittel and Stefano Celozzi put Frankfurt 3-2 up with quarter of an hour to play. Edu crashed home a thunderous drive to make it all square inside the last ten minutes before bundling home a last-minute winner.

All bar Bayern and Düsseldorf are in action this weekend, meaning that the latter will be unbeaten in the league for another fortnight at least. We get under way tonight with Augsburg, promoted last season and who were top after three games, hosting Frankfurt who are the only team still awaiting their first win.

Saturday brings us a top-four clash between Dortmund and Stuttgart. The champions are poised with a game in hand over Schalke, but suffered Champions League defeat in midweek. Stuttgart look to have put last year’s poor season behind them and can go top with a win at Signal Iduna Park, something they haven’t managed since 2007.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Hamburg host Hannover, Hertha are at home to Freiburg, and Hoffenheim entertain Wolfsburg.

Sunday starts with bottom-side Gladbach taking on Nürnberg, desperate to get their season back on track having suffered four straight defeats and a draw without scoring a single goal since their last-gasp win at Dortmund three weeks ago.

The weekend closes out with Leverkusen and Werder Bremen meeting at the BayArena, and Mainz at home to top-of-the-table Schalke who have won seven straight, conceding just twice (and both those in the Europa League).
