A sixth-minute goal from Pepe Pineda was enough to settle the clash between Andorra and Austria in Enschede this afternoon as Gray Surman’s Austrian U19 side were eliminated at the first hurdle to try and qualify for next summer’s UEFA Championship.
With a little over five minutes on the clock, Adonai Aparicio sent a long-ball up the right flank for Andorra to Pepe Pineda who brought the ball inside the box and fired past Steffen Gutzeit from a narrow angle.
Austria had more than their fair share of chances, but weren’t able to beat Jose Trigo who made a string of fine saves to keep a clean sheet. They did have the ball in the back of the net through Steffen Stark five minutes before the break, but the flag was up as the forward strayed offside from Florian Horak’s cross.
In the other game, Netherlands beat Estonia 2-0 to qualify, and they’ll be joined by either Andorra or Estonia.
Sunday: Austria v. Estonia, Netherlands v. Andorra.
