Surman Steps Down After Austrian Adventure

Grayson Surman has stepped-down with immediate effect from his role as Coach of the Austria U19 side after their failure to progress to the Second Qualifying Round for next summer’s European Championship.

After a win and a draw in his two warm-up matches, Surman’s Austrian side were reduced to ten men before defeat to the Netherlands, before a lacklustre display saw them beaten by an early Andorra goal two days later.

The side bowed out of their qualifying group with a last-gasp comeback win over Estonia, but Surman said that after sixty days with the Austrian FA, he didn’t believe that he could bring the necessary dedication to the role now that they had nothing to play for.

Surman indicated that nothing was more important to him that seeing his Borussia Dortmund side retain the three trophies they won under his guidance last term, but he wished the Austrian camp the very best of luck for the future.
