Bundesliga Round-Up: Matchday Eight

bundesliga-RESULTS-540

Schalke have gone top after the weekend action, despite having two men sent-off in a fiery 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim at the Veltins Arena. Lewis Holtby put the hosts in front five minutes after the break, before Kyriakos Papadopoulos collected two bookings. Eren Derdiyok smashed home a wonderful equaliser inside the final five minutes for last season’s 2.Bundesliga winners, and as tempers flared, Holtby was dismissed.

Wolfsburg are level with them on points after beating Dortmund 4-1 at home. Bas Dost scored in both halves, with goals from Tolga Cigerci and Diego either side of the break stunning last season’s champions, who had no answer to an impressive second-half display from the hosts.

Frankfurt became the final side to get their first win this season, defeating Bayern Munich at home thanks to Andriy Voronin’s fifth goal of the season. Bayern end the weekend in eleventh place, with just nine points from their opening seven matches.

Stefan Kießling scored his sixth of the season as Leverkusen won in controversial circumstances in Nürnberg. The hosts had a goal chalked-off for a debatable offside call inside the opening fifteen minutes, and Kießling looked like he fouled home ‘keeper Raphael Schäfer as he scored, just moments after they’d been reduced to ten men with Umaru Bangura’s sending-off.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored his seventh of the campaign with the first goal of the weekend, putting Hertha in front at Werder Bremen who equalised shortly after the break through Joseph Akpala. Elsewhere, Freiburg beat Augsburg 3-0 to inflict their fourth defeat in the last five, Stuttgart survived  an early red card to beat Hamburg, Nando Rafael hit a hat-trick as Düsseldorf dispatched Mainz, and Hannover and Gladbach held each other to a 0-0 draw.

Next weekend features Hamburg-Wolfsburg, and the Revierderby between Dortmund and Schalke at Signal Iduna Park which finished 6-0 to the hosts last season.
