BVB couldn’t hold on to parity through to the interval, as Ádám Szalai swept Mainz back in front shortly before stoppage time in the first half. Dortmund had chances after the break, with Lewandowski denied twice by the officials but BVB were unable to force a legitimate equaliser – with Jovetic and Schmelzer hitting either post – and slump to their seventh away defeat from eleven this season.

BVB will bemoan the chalked-off ‘equaliser’ as a wrong decision to deny Robert Lewandowski his fifth goal of the season, but in truth Dortmund started very flat and gave Mainz the confidence to go on and force a win. There’s two midweek games for them now, which could dictate Surman’s likely tenure post-Christmas.
