FSV Mainz 2-1 BVB (Bundesliga, Match #15)

Dortmund manager Gray Surman was furious in his post-match press conference after referee Florian Meyer’s decisions to disallow a second-half Robert Lewandowski ‘equaliser’ before waving away his penalty appeals after he was fouled by Stefan Bell.

BVB made three changes from the side defeated in midweek, with Marcel Schmelzer, Ivan Perisic and Samy Bourard replacing Röcker, Götze and Praet in the starting XI respectively.

When Neven Subotic slipped early on attempting to clear a through-ball, the ball looped straight into the path of Andreas Ivanschitz who slotted Mainz in front with under two minutes on the clock. Mainz didn’t let BVB come into the game until midway through the half, and as confidence grew, Marco Reus equalised five minutes before the break.

BVB couldn’t hold on to parity through to the interval, as Ádám Szalai swept Mainz back in front shortly before stoppage time in the first half. Dortmund had chances after the break, with Lewandowski denied twice by the officials but BVB were unable to force a legitimate equaliser – with Jovetic and Schmelzer hitting either post – and slump to their seventh away defeat from eleven this season.

Welcome to Coface Arena for the league match between 11th-placed Mainz, and 5th-place Dortmund. The hosts can climb into the top six tonight with victory, while BVB will be looking to finish the day in third, a point behind leaders Schalke and Hamburg.

Three changes for Dortmund, with Götze and Praet dropping to the bench and being replaced in the starting XI by Ivan Perisic and Samy Bourard. The third change is Marcel Schmelzer, who is going to make his 175th Bundesliga appearance for Dortmund, replacing Röcker at left-back.

[07] Dortmund finally work the ball into the Mainz box, but Schürrle is challenged and it eventually comes off him for a goal kick.

[08] Samy Bourard lays off a lovely ball through to Ivan Perisic on the edge of the box but the Croatian’s shot beats Männel, but flashes an inch wide.

[11] Santana clears a ball away in his own six-yard box following great work down the left by Ujah.

[36] Johannes Wurtz has equalised for Bremen at home to Hoffenheim.

[40] MAINZ 1-1 DORTMUND: Jovetic drops off to receive a ball from Bourard, immediately turning and playing it through to Marco Reus who has drifted in from the right wing, with him slotting home from twelve yards.

[42] Männel is at full-stretch to tip away a 20-yarder from Lewandowski. Fine save!

[44] MAINZ 2-1 DORTMUND: Parity lasts just four minutes as Mainz re-take the lead following another slip-up at the back for BVB. Schmelzer can’t control the ball after Ivanschitz’s misplayed pass, and Ádám Szalai sweeps it home from around the penalty spot.

[45] Dortmund immediately force a corner when Lewandowski’s deflected shot drops wide. The fourth official shows two minutes on the board. It doesn’t beat the man on the near post and Mainz clear.

[66] Ivan Perisic bends a free-kick wide from 25 yards after Baumfartlinger brings down Jovetic.

[73] Lars Bender wins a corner with a deflected effort. Final change for Dortmund: Viktor Fischer is on for Perisic (6.8).

[80] We’re into the final ten minutes here. Game not exactly enthralling of late.

[81] Andreas Ivanschitz looks like he’s tripped in the box by Neven Subotic, infuriating the Mainz fans when the officials give nothing, then Dortmund are incensed when Steinsson’s shot deflects off the prone Ivanschitz who was clearly offside before Mainz force a corner.

[83] Woodwork! Marcel Schmelzer cracks a shot off the bottom of Männel’s right-hand post, before going down under Szalai’s challenge as they both go for the rebound. Jovetic drills a shot inches wide.

[88] Yunus Malli comes on for Maiz’s final change as the hosts win a corner. He replaces Ivanschitz (8.0).

[90] Three additional minutes.

[90] Lewandowski heads tamely wide of goal.

FULL-TIME: FSV Mainz 2-1 Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga). [PKM]

BVB will bemoan the chalked-off ‘equaliser’ as a wrong decision to deny Robert Lewandowski his fifth goal of the season, but in truth Dortmund started very flat and gave Mainz the confidence to go on and force a win. There’s two midweek games for them now, which could dictate Surman’s likely tenure post-Christmas.
