Lucas Leiva has been named as WorldSoccer magazine’s Player of the Year, capping a great 2014 for the Brazilian in which the 27 year-old defensive midfielder made a £42m move from Liverpool to Tottenham before winning the FIFA World Cup this summer.

Daniel Alves (Barcelona) polled second, with Manchester City’s Neymar a close third. Lionel Messi had won three of the previous four years’ awards, finishing second to Xavi in 2010. Leiva is the first Brazilian winner since Kaka in 2007.
