Leverkusen have gone top of the table on goal difference after both Wolfsburg and Schalke dropped points in midweek, with Dortmund climbing into the top four for the first time in seven games by leapfrogging opponents Hamburg on Tuesday night.

Second-half goals from Junior Fernandes and Stefan Kießling were enough for Leverkusen to win at Mainz, extending their unbeaten run to ten games in all competitions, putting them top after Wolfsburg drew a blank at Freiburg.

Schalke dropped three points at Frankfurt on Wednesday night, with a brace from Alexander Meier after the break spoiling the visitors’ chance to go top, and keeping the top four within two points of each other. Dortmund move back into the top four after a 3-0 win over Hamburg with a fantastic Mario Götze free-kick the highlight of the night.

Bayern Munich were a goal down at home to Nürnberg inside six minutes but turned the game round and cruised to a 5-1 victory. Another team coming from behind on Wednesday night were Augsburg who left it late to condemn Hannover to a ninth consecutive league game without a win.

Werder Bremen also found themselves behind early-on at Düsseldorf, but were in front by the break and hung on to pick up three points to move themselves out of the bottom three, replaced by Gladbach who needed a stoppage time Luuk de Jong equaliser to snatch a point at ten-man Hoffenheim.

Elsewhere, Stuttgart made short work of Hertha Berlin’s half-time lead, with three goals in 18 second-half minutes earning them their first league win in two months.

All eighteen teams are back in action over the weekend, and Wolfsburg host Hertha Berlin on Friday night with the chance to go back top.
